THURSDAY RESULTS – November 10

(high school volleyball)

(CEDAR RAPIDS) — Number-two Gehlen Catholic rebounded from a first set loss to beat number-nine East Union three sets-to-one in the Class 1A State Tournament quarterfinals Thursday as the Lady Jays advanced to Friday’s semifinals in Cedar Rapids with a 21-25, 25-12, 25-18, 25-10 victory.  Gehlen will meet number-six Janesville Friday night at 7:30.  Steph Rohe led Gehlen with 15 kills and 14 digs and was 20-of-20 serving with one ace.  Kaitlin Langel had 12 kills and 16 digs and also added four aces on 13-of-13 serving.  Sophomore Alison Schnepf had nine kills, Becca Vonnahme added 17 digs and Amber Timmins dished out 36 assists.  The victory improved Gehlen’s record to 33-and-1.

(CEDAR RAPIDS) — Gehlen Catholic is headed to the championship match of the Class 1A State volleyball tournament!  The number-two rated Lady Jays punched their ticket Friday night with a gruelling three sets-to-one victory over number-six Janesville, 17-25, 25-23, 25-20, 25-22, in the semifinals at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.  Gehlen will play top-rated, three-time defending State champion Tripoli in the finals at 5 o’clock Saturday night.  Katelin Langel and Steph Rohe led the Jays to victory again.  Langel finished with 14 kills and 15 digs and finished 14-of-16 serving with a pair of aces.  Rohe had 13 kills and 22 digs and was 13-of-14 serving with two aces, including a match-ending ace.  Amber Timmins, whose dink kill lifted Gehlen to within a point of victory, finished with five kills, 39 assists, 22 digs and was 14-of-16 serving with two aces.  Senior Becca Vonnahme added 19 digs as Gehlen’s back row play was key to the victory.  The Lady Jays are 34-and-1 heading into the school’s first volleyball championship match.  Tripoli is 39-and-3.  The Panthers beat Gehlen in five sets a year ago after trailing two sets to none in the 2010 semifinals.  Tripoli is led by last year’s Player-of-the-Year Megan Gilbert, a 6’1″ senior middle hitter.

(CEDAR RAPIDS) — Top-rated Tripoli picked up their fourth straight Class 1A state volleyball title Saturday night and the ninth in the last 12 years with a three-game sweep of number-two Gehlen Catholic 25-14, 25-21, 25-12 at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.  The Panthers were again led by all-state middle hitter Megan Gilbert.  The Saint Louis University recruit had 22 kills and was named captain of the 1A all-tournament team for the second year in a row.  Gilbert led a formidable blocking wall that stymied Gehlen’s attackers with two solo blocks and two assist blocks.  Junior Katelin Langel, who was Gehlen’s lone representative on the all-tournament team, led the Lady Jays with eight kills while senior Steph Rohe added seven kills.  Gehlen, who recorded 107 digs in a four-set win over Janesville Friday night in the semifinals, had only 38 digs Saturday night against Tripoli’s hitters.  Gehlen Catholic ends the season with a 34-and-2 record.

Former Hinton standout, Jessica Vander Kooi, was inducted into the volleyball Hall-of-Fame during pregame ceremonies ahead of the Gehlen/Tripoli match Saturday night in Cedar Rapids.
