Nominations For Mayor, City Council Member, And Hospital Trustee Now Open
(Le Mars) — Candidates wanting to seek the positions of mayor, city council member, or hospital trustee can now submit their nominations. The deadline to file is Thursday, September 19th. City Clerk Bev Langel says Bill Young has already returned his nomination papers for re-election to the Floyd Valley Hospital Board of Trustees. There are two positions up for election for the hospital trustees. As for the city positions, Mayor Dick Kirchoff is up for re-election, as are the council seats for Ward one presently held
by John Leonard, Ward 3 which is currently represented by Ken Nelson, and an at-large position now held by Rex Knapp. Hospital Trustees serve a four year term. Council members are also elected for four years, and the mayor position is for a two year term.
More Arrests Made From Sioux County Burglaries
(Orange City) — Sioux County authorities have made additional arrests stemming from a burglary investigation. Deputies have determined that several additional incidents of burglary have occurred in January, February, and early August at Post Equipment Corporation of Rock Valley. Officials have arrested 20 year-old Drew Kersten of Sheldon, 18-year old Jasmine Prellwitz of Spencer, 18-year old Angie Padilla of Hawarden and a 17 year old male juvenile from Boyden. All four have been charged with 3rd degree burglary and 3rd degree theft. On August 17th, Sioux County law enforcement officials were able to catch two people in the act of committing a burglary at the Post Equipment Corporation. Joshua Humphrey, age 20, of Granville and 21-year old Jonathon Oldenkamp of Primghar were arrested for 3rd degree burglary and 2nd degree theft.
Crop Duster Sprays School Bus
BELMOND, Iowa (AP) – Officials say some students in northern Iowa have been treated at a hospital after the school bus they were riding was sprayed by a crop duster.
Kirk Nelson, superintendent of the Belmond-Klemme Community School District, says the students were traveling to schools in Hancock County Thursday morning when the incident happened. The ages of the students are unclear.
Nelson says at least seven students were in the bus when the crop duster sprayed what he believes was insecticide. About 20 additional students were then picked up.
The district contacted parents and the students were taken to a local hospital as a precaution. Nelson says none of the students have reported feeling ill.
It’s unclear what company owns the crop duster. The Hancock County sheriff’s office has not released additional information.
Deputy Injured From Accident
MONONA, Iowa (AP) – A Clayton County sheriff’s deputy has been injured during an accident while conducting a traffic stop in northeast Iowa.
The Iowa State Patrol says the accident occurred about 10:15 p.m. Tuesday along U.S. Highway 18 just west of Monona.
The patrol says a car driven by 84-year-old Mary Svendsen was headed down a highway shoulder before ramming the back of Deputy Craig Johnson’s vehicle. The patrol says the emergency lights on Johnson’s vehicle were flashing.
Svendsen and Johnson were taken to a hospital.
DNR Wants Visitors To Monitor Rivers And Streams For Labor Day Weekend
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Officials want visitors to Iowa’s rivers and lakes over the Labor Day weekend to monitor low water levels.
The state Department of Natural Resources says water levels are nearly identical to levels measured during last year’s drought. As a result, some paddlers and tubers could end up doing some walking.
Officials say people should check stream flows to make sure the water can support a canoe, kayak or tube. It will ensure paddlers and tubers don’t get stuck with a much longer trip than they planned.
