Van’s Sanitation Unveils New Recycling Center
(Le Mars) — Van’s Sanitation of Le Mars unveiled to the public their new recycling center Friday morning while hosting a Chamber coffee. The facility will allow Van’s Sanitation to expand on their recycling business. Co-Owner Scott VanderSluis explains.

The new facility measures 85 feet wide by 300 feet long, and consists of a series of drop bays, conveyor belts, and fans to better assist with the separation of recyclables. VanderSluis says with the new complex, and the hope to gain additional business from neighboring communities, Van’s Sanitation could add up to 17 more jobs to the payroll.

Van’s Sanitation has invested more than $1.2 million into the new recycling center and VanderSluis says they hope to begin using the new facility within the next two weeks.
Rupp Honored For “Excellence In Education” By Diocese
(Sioux City) — A Remsen St. Mary’s fourth grade teacher will be honored during the upcoming Bishop’s Dinner scheduled for October 12th in Sioux City. Cathy Rupp was notified that she is the recipient of the Excellence in Education award. Rupp will join Bishop Walker Nickless during the annual banquet. Rupp was nominated by Remsen St. Mary’s principal Pete Haefs. In his nomination letter for Rupp, Haefs noted that Rupp has been with the school for 38 years. He says, “Cathy has done an outstanding job forming relationships with her students and doing her utmost to assure they are learning as they should.”
In addition to her teaching duties, Rupp is active in her parish by planning Mass liturgies and special events as well as participating in several committees.
The Bishop’s Dinner for Catholic Schools is the single largest fundraiser held each year benefiting all 16 Catholic school systems throughout the Diocese of Sioux City. The featured speaker at this year’s dinner is former Kansas City Chiefs coach Herm Edwards.
School Officials And Police Department To Hold A.L.I.C.E. Workshop
(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Community Board of Education will hold a special meeting scheduled for Wednesday, September 3rd at the Le Mars Education Service Center. No action will be taken by the school board during the meeting. However, school board members are invited to participate in a workshop with members of the Le Mars Police Department and the Le Mars Community Schools administration to learn more about the program called A.L.I.C.E. which stands for Alert Lockdown Inform Counter Evacuate emergency response program. The workshop is scheduled to begin at 5:00 p.m.
Lawsuit Against Planned Parenthood May Proceed
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A federal appeals court says a former Planned Parenthood clinic director may go forward with a lawsuit against the organization, reinstating portions of the case dismissed in 2012 by a judge.
The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals says in Friday’s ruling Sue Thayer has provided sufficient detail to try claims that Planned Parenthood’s Des Moines affiliate unlawfully filed claims for Medicaid money for unnecessary quantities of birth control pills, pills dispensed without examinations and abortion-related services.
Planned Parenthood, which denies the allegations, has another chance for dismissal since the court sent the case back to a judge for further hearings on a procedural filing issue. The group’s attorney did not immediately respond to a message.
Thayer filed suit in 2011 represented by the nonprofit Christian group Alliance Defending Freedom.
Templeton Rye To Change Label To Indicate Location Of Distillery
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Executives at Templeton Rye say they will change labels on bottles of their celebrated whiskey to be clear the alcohol is distilled in Indiana, not Iowa.
Company President Scott Bush and Chairman Vern Underwood says the company would change its labels after a newspaper published a story in which industry experts questioned whether Templeton Rye met federal disclosure requirements.
Bush and Underwood also told the newspaper Templeton Rye was distilled in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, using a stock recipe and not one derived from the whiskey’s prohibition era past.
Since it began selling Templeton Rye in late 2005, the whiskey has been a big seller in Iowa and has emphasized its colorful history in the state.
The company is working to build an Iowa distillery.

Osage Man Wins Powerball Prize
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A 58-year-old Osage man has claimed his $2 million Iowa Powerball prize.
Iowa Lottery officials say Duane Hanson turned in winning his ticket on Thursday. His ticket for Wednesday night’s $80 million drawing matched the first five numbers but missed the Powerball number. He’d added a Power Play option, which multiplied his $1 million prize to $2 million before taxes.
He told lottery officials that he’s played the same random set of numbers for years.
Hanson works as a conductor for the Cedar River Railroad in Waterloo. He bought his winning ticket at a convenience store in Osage. Hanson says the prize will help with his retirement investments when he quits working in 2015.
