LE MARS — Woodbury Central kept the Gehlen Catholic basketball teams in their January funk by taking a non-conference doubleheader from the Jays Monday night at the Ronald Fox gymnasium. Woodbury Central rolled to an 11-0 lead and coasted in with an 82-37 victory in the girls game, dropping the Lady Jays to 1-and-10 and extending their losing streak to six straight. The Wildcats improved to 10-and-5. Woodbury Central landed five players in double figures and had two others with nine points. Halle Gray led the way with 16 with freshman Sidney Steffen adding 14, Bailey Even 11 and Jacey Stratton and Payge Ronfeldt 10 each. Keely Steffen and Mikayla Mitchell had nine apiece. Jolee Linden and Grace Auchstetter had 12 and nine respectively for Gehlen Catholic.
Woodbury Central used a 10-1 start to the second half to extend a 29-27 halftime lead to 39-28 two minutes into the third quarter and the Wildcats went onto post a 65-50 victory, sending the Gehlen Cathholic boys to their fourth straight loss. The Jays made one more push in the fourth quarter in an attempt to salvage the night, running off seven straight points in the final four minutes of the game to trim a 12-point deficit to five with 2:35 to play. But the Cats outscored Gehlen 12-1 the rest of the way to win the game going away. Clay Baldwin and Tyler Walker had 14 each to lead Woodbury Central while Carson Kneip’s 13 and Roman Freking’s 11 led Gehlen. The Jays fall to 4-and-8 while Woodbury Central improves to 6-and-9. Gehlen hosts Remsen-Union Friday as the Jays return to War Eagle Conference play.

UNDATED – Another No. 1 men’s basketball team has lost in the state of Iowa this season. George Niang (nee-ANG’) had a team-high 22 points and Monte Morris added 20 as 19th-ranked Iowa State downed Oklahoma 82-77, the Cyclones’ first win over a No. 1 team since 1957 against Wilt Chamberlain’s Kansas Jayhawks. Northern Iowa beat North Carolina and Iowa knocked off Michigan State earlier this season.

LE MARS — Both the Western Christian guys and gals basketball teams rolled into the Bulldogs new gym Tuesday night on a roll and Le Mars did nothing to slow down the Wolfpack dropping both ends of their Lakes Conference doubleheader to the league leaders, 66-37 in the girls game and 67-43 in the boys contest. In the girls game, Western jumped out to a 9-0 lead to lay the foundation for their 11th straight victory in the 2015-2016 season and their 19th consecutive win over Le Mars. The Wolfpack led 33-19 at halftime and then proceeded to outscore Le Mars 23-7 in the third quarter to lead by 30 going into the final quarter. Western used their heighth advantage inside to dominate in the paint, getting 21 points from 6’2″ Kaira Moss and 6’2″ Ashtyn Veerbeek added 17. Madison Dreckman led Le Mars with 12. Western improves to 12-and-2 for the season and remain tied with Cherokee for the league lead at 7-and-1. Le Mars falls to 6-and-8 for the season and 4-and-4 in the Lakes Conference.
In the boys contest, Western Christian’s size factored into the outcome as well as 6’6″ Josh Van Lingen netted 22 points for the Wolfpack. Sharp-shooter Taylor Miedema dropped in 13, collecting three of Western’s five three-pointers. Trent Hilbrands led Le Mars with 20. Western led by 17 at the break and had built the lead to 28 by the end of the third quarter. The lead climbed to 32 early in the final period. Western Christian improved their season mark to 12-and-1 while remaining unbeaten in league play at 8-and-0. Le Mars falls to 4-and-4 in league play and 5-and-7 for the season.
Le Mars hosts Spencer Friday and Western Christian entertains Spirit Lake.

UNDATED — Ninth-ranked Iowa took on Rutgers Thursday night in a game that was expected to be a blowout after the Scarlet Knights absorbed a 50-point loss to Purdue on Monday. The game was tied late in the first half before the Hawkeyes put together a 16-7 run and pulled away in a 90-76 win at Piscataway, New Jersey. Peter Jok led The Hqwks with 29 points while Jarrod Uthoff and Anthony Cleamons scored 20 points each. Former Sioux City East standout Adam Woodbury had 12 points and 11 rebounds for Iowa. The Hawkeyes improve to 15-and-3 for the season and their 6-and-0 Big Ten mark keeps them tied for the league lead with Indiana.

LE MARS — Gehlen Catholic halted a four-game losing streak Friday night with a 41-21 War Eagle Conference boys basketball victory over Remsen-Union at the Ronald Fox memorial gymnasium. The Jays built a 29-15 halftime lead and then took advantage of a cold shooting second half by the Rockets to win by 20. Remsen-Union failed to score in the third quarter, missing all 12 shots they attempted. The Rockets went 1-for-12 in the final quarter, finally hitting their lone second half field goal with 2:42 to play in the game on a put back by Nate Reiter in the middle of the lane. Gehlen scored only 12 second half points on 5-of-17 shooting. Cooper Davis scored ten points off the bench for the Jays to lead all scorers. Chris Schmid had six for the Rockets. Gehlen improves to 5-and-8 for the season and 3-and-4 in the W-E-C. R-U falls to 1-and-15 for the season and 0-and-9 in league play.
Remsen-Union won the girls game 57-34 to sweep their home-and-away games with Gehlen Catholic for the first time in the series history. The Rockets led 18-2 after the first quarter before the Lady Jays opened the second quarter with a 14-3 run to draw within 21-16 with 4:21 to play in the first half. Jolee Linden drilled four three-pointers in the quarter, including three in a row, to spark the Gehlen surge. Unfortunately, the Lady Jays wouldn’t score again for the next seven minutes while R-U reeled off 13 straight points to again gain the upper hand. Linden finished with 17 points to lead all scorers in the game. Brianna Jensen led the Rockets with 16 while Megan Maass added 15 and Erica Starssner 11. Gehlen falls to 1-and-11 for the season with their seventh straight defeat and 1-and-6 in the War Eagle Conference. Remsen-Union improves to 9-and-7 for the season and 5-and-4 in league play.
LE MARS —Jake Thompson drained a three-pointer from the right wing at the buzzer to rally the Le Mars Bulldogs to a 54-53 overtime victory over Spencer Friday night in Lakes Conference boys basketball action at the Bulldogs new gym. The two teams had played double overtime back in December with Spencer winning their first meeting 95-84. The Dogs trailed by 11 entering the fourth quarter before they rallied to tie the game at 48-all at the end of regulation. Trent Hilbrands led Le Mars with 17 points and 15 rebounds while dishing out eight assists. Thompson had 13 for the Bulldogs and Dylan Harms 10. Blake Illg had 22 for Spencer, who falls to 11-and-3 for the season and 6-and-3 in league play. Jake Kluender added 18 for the Tigers. Le Mars improves to 6-and-7 for the season and 5-and-4 in the Lakes Conference.
The Spencer girls beat Le Mars for the second time this season, 54-42, getting 19 points from Keeley Petzenhauser. Madison Dreckman had 14 for Le Mars with Sidney Baumgartner adding 10 and Cassidy Utesch nine. The Lady Tigers led 28-12 at the half. Le Mars falls to 6-and-9 for the season and 4-and-5 in league play.

DENVER – Peyton Manning threw for a pair of first-half touchdowns and the Denver Broncos batted away a two-point conversion try with 12 seconds left to secure a 20-18 victory over New England in the AFC Championship game. Brian McManus hit two field goals, a 52-yarder with 33 seconds remaining in the first half and a 31-yard kick that gave Denver a 20-12 lead with about 10 minutes left. Tom Brady hit Rob Gronkowski for a four-yard scoring pass in the closing seconds, but the two-point conversion pass was tipped by Aqib Talib and intercepted by Bradley Roby, putting the Broncos in the Super Bowl for the eighth time.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Carolina Panthers are making their second Super Bowl appearance after Cam Newton threw for two touchdowns and ran for two more in a 49-15 pounding of Arizona in the NFC Championship game. Newton was 19 of 28 for 335 yards through the air, including an 86-yard scoring pass to Corey Brown in the first quarter. The Panthers intercepted Carson Palmer four times and recovered his two fumbles.
