National E-M-T Week
(Le Mars) — This week is recognized as EMT week, a time when we honor those men and women who respond to our medical needs, and if needed transport us to a local healthcare facility.
The Le Mars Ambulance Service is fortunate to have 20 volunteers that offer their time and assist during emergencies. However, Rosacker says the Le Mars Ambulance Service is always looking for additional volunteers.
He says becoming a certified Emergency Medical Technician requires several hours of training. In many communities, Rosacker says, there simply are not enough volunteers to maintain a local ambulance service.
For the last several years, Rosacker says the Le Mars Ambulance Service has seen an increase in the number of calls.
The Le Mars Ambulance Service operates what is known as a provisional paramedic service, which according to Rosacker, means I-V’s and other medication can be administered.
National Nurses Week
(Le Mars) — Last week was recognized as National Nurses Week, In honor of that we sat down with the Director of Patient Care at Floyd Valley Healthcare in Le Mars, Loretta Myers who talked about the importance of nurses and why we shouldn’t overlook there importance.
Myers went on to talk about the new generation of nurses and the programs and benefits they have in northwest Iowa.
Myers concluded with her joy of working in nursing and the significance of the Floyd Valley Health Clinic.
Fewer Iowa Kids Drinking Alcohol
A study finds the number of Iowa high school students who drink alcohol is falling but a state health official says the numbers are still far too high. Julie Hibben, in the Bureau of Substance Abuse at the Iowa Department of Public Health, says moms and dads in Iowa can have a significant impact on the wellbeing of their kids — all it takes is a little time.
An Iowa study finds the frequency of binge drinking, illicit drug use and cigarette smoking is lower among kids between 12 and 17 whose parents engage in monitoring behaviors, like helping with homework.
According to the latest Iowa Youth Survey, 23-percent of the 11th graders in Iowa reported having one drink of alcohol in the last month, and of those, 14-percent binge drank, meaning, they had five or more drinks of alcohol in a row within a couple of hours.
This is National Prevention Week, which Hibben says is an opportunity to raise awareness about underage drinking, emphasize healthy choices, and encourage each other to make a meaningful difference. The theme is “It’s Up to All of Us.”
Hy-Vee Food Stores Recall
Hy-Vee Food Stores has issued a voluntary recall of its frozen Hy-Vee Vegetable Fried Rice and frozen Hy-Vee Chicken Fried Rice products across its eight-state region.
The recall is because of possible contamination with Listeria, an organism, which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
So far no illnesses have been reported in connection with this product.
Customers who purchased this product should discard it or return it to their local Hy-Vee store for a full refund.
These products were sold at Hy-Vee stores in Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, South Dakota and Wisconsin between July 24, 2014, and May 12, 2016.
Out of an abundance of caution, Hy-Vee is recalling these two products from all of its stores.
