Police Investigate Walmart Theft and Arson

(Le Mars) — Le Mars Police are investigating a theft and arson incident that happened at the Le Mars Walmart store, on Friday evening at around 9:00 p.m. Captain Tim Hop says they are looking for an older white male subject.

Hop says the police believe the vehicle may be from Woodbury County. Hop says as of now, the investigation is focused on just the one subject. Captain Hop says the subject was using the fireworks as a distraction for his get-a-way.

Police are still studying the store’s surveillance video. As of yet there has not been a photo released of the subject in question. The Le Mars Police are asking for the public’s assistance. Anyone with additional information about the theft are asked to contact the Le Mars Police Department at 546-4113. Officials
say since the subject used fireworks and intentionally discharged them inside a building directed at people, that would carry a charge of arson.

Partner of Lottery Official Pleads Guilty

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – A man who collected a Wisconsin Lottery jackpot that was rigged by his friend has admitted using the windfall for an investment scheme that produced another wave of undeserved government money.
Court records show Robert Rhodes recently testified that he used the $783,000 payout to receive an additional $180,000 in bogus tax refunds.
The Texas businessman sent $450,000 to the Caribbean to buy an insurance policy for a corporation that never did any business – except receive the lottery prize. He claimed the policy as a tax-deductible “business expense,”
receiving refunds from the U.S. government and Wisconsin.
The St. Lucia-based insurer where Rhodes sent his cash was later accused of duping investors. Rhodes says the company “absconded” with $150,000.
Rhodes and former lottery contractor Eddie Tipton pleaded guilty to rigging the 2007 Megabucks drawing.
