Plymouth County Hosting the Iowa Sheriff’s and Deputies Association Honor Guard

(Le Mars) — You may notice more deputies in the Le Mars area this week. The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office will be hosting the state wide training for the Iowa State Sheriff’s and Deputies Association honor guard. The ISSDA honor guard is made up of deputies from across the state and service at the request of the ISSDA board. The ISSDA honor guard provides honors for the opening of all ISSDA formal events. They also participate in the Iowa Peace Officers memorial, Iowa Law Enforcement Academy graduations, and the Iowa State Fair parade. In addition, the ISSDA honor guard provides funeral honors for retired deputies and sheriffs in Iowa. The honor guard also assists in any Iowa line of duty law enforcement death. Most recently, assisting with the funeral of Deputy Mark Burbridge in May of 2017. The ISSDA honor guard also sends representatives to high profile line of duty deaths in the country. Most recently sending deputies to Dallas in July of 2016 and Kansas City in July of 2016.

 

 

Sergeant Bluff School Superintendent Charged With OWI

SERGEANT BLUFF, Iowa (AP) – A northwest Iowa school superintendent has been accused of drunken driving.
Court records say 57-year-old Rod Earleywine is scheduled to be arraigned Sept. 7 on a charge of operating while under the influence, first offense.
He’s superintendent of the Sergeant Bluff-Luton Community School District. Earleywine didn’t immediately return messages left for him Monday. His attorney’s office number rang unanswered.
Earleywine was arrested Aug. 5 in Dickinson County.
The district website still listed Earleywine as superintendent on Monday. School board President Jeff Wright has declined to comment about Earleywine’s arrest.

 

 

Former Iowa City Mayor Now Running For Governor

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – A former mayor of Iowa City has joined the race for the Democratic gubernatorial nomination. Ross Wilburn announced his campaign start Monday, saying he wants “to help us improve the way we’re doing things so we can become the Iowa folks are wanting to see.” He also says he wants to bridge the growing divisions between Iowa residents. Wilburn served one term as Iowa City’s mayor and three terms as a council member. Wilburn worked as director of equity for the Iowa City Community School District for six years and eight years as executive director of the Crisis Center of Johnson County. Other Democrats who’ve announced their nomination race entries are state Sen. Nate Boulton, Cathy Glasson, Fred Hubbell, Andy McGuire, John Norris, state Rep. Todd Prichard and Jon Neiderbach.

 

 

Texas Man Wins One Million Dollar Prize From Powerball

CLIVE, Iowa (AP) – A Texas man who graduated from high school in Denison has won a $1 million prize from the Iowa Lottery.
Lottery officials say Wayne and Vicki Dixon had journeyed from Allen, Texas, for his 55-year high school class reunion. They arrived early and decided to stay Wednesday night in Avoca. As he filled up their vehicle at the Wins America Travel Centre, his wife went inside to buy a Powerball ticket.
Lottery officials say she checked it Saturday and found that it matched the first five numbers but missed the Powerball number. The consolation prize they claimed Monday? $1 million before taxes.
No one won the Powerball prize Wednesday or Saturday, so officials say they expect the jackpot to reach $430 million ($273.4 million cash option) for this Wednesday’s drawing.

 

 

License Plates Graphic Designer The Target Of Criticism

AMES, Iowa (AP) – The graphic designer of the new Iowa license plate options has expressed her disappointment and frustration with some critics of the designs.
Gov. Kim Reynolds and Transportation Department Director Mark Lowe unveiled the three possible designs Friday, and people have been invited to vote for their favorite .
The Des Moines Register reports that Iowa Transportation Department employee Christina Andersen said in Facebook post that some of the criticism on social media brought her to tears. She also said she was artistically hamstrung by law enforcement considerations, which require that the numbers and letters be easily read by police officers.
Andersen declined to discuss the issue with the Register and didn’t immediately return email and voicemail messages Monday from The Associated Press.

 

 

Des Moines Vigil Planned For This Evening

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A vigil “against hate” has been scheduled in Des Moines in response to a white supremacist rally in Virginia last weekend that resulted in deadly violence.
The “Shine the Light Against Hate” vigil will be held Monday night at Cowles Commons in downtown Des Moines. At least 100 people plan to attend.
Interfaith Alliance of Iowa, a self-described progressive group, is promoting the vigil, which will include speakers and music.
Similar events have been held around the country since Saturday, after a group of white nationalists protested in Charlottesville, Virginia, over the city’s decision to remove a Confederate monument. A man is suspected of ramming a car into a crowd of peaceful counter-protesters, killing a 32-year-old woman. A state police helicopter crashed into the woods, killing two troopers onboard.
