Hebert’s Preliminary Hearing Postponed Until November 

(Le Mars) — The woman accused of killing her husband was originally scheduled to appear in Plymouth County District Court this morning for her preliminary hearing. However, the court has granted a continuance for 33-year old Becky Hebert who was arrested and charged with 2nd degree murder following
an incident that happened on October 6. Hebert is accused of shooting Jeremy Hebert, who died as a result of a shotgun wound to the chest and abdomen. The new preliminary hearing has now been scheduled for Monday, November 13th.

 

 

 

Merrill Police Release Names Of Accident Victims

(Merrill) — The Merrill Police Department has released the names of the victims involved in the accident that happened on October 11th when a semi truck collided with a Volkswagen Beetle. You’ll recall that accident happened at about 4:05 p.m. at the intersection of county road C-44 and Highway 75 in Merrill. The driver of the Volkswagen vehicle was identified as 64-year old Pearlena Nelson of Meriden, Iowa, and the driver of the semi truck was 52-year old Charles Kerrins of Grand Meadow, Minnesota. Nelson received serious injuries from that accident and was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

 

 

 

City Officials Close 6th Avenue Southwest For Overlay Project

(Le Mars) — Le Mars City public works officials have closed 6th Avenue between 1st street southwest and 2nd street southwest for a new street overlay project.
City officials believe the street will remain closed for a duration of two to three weeks.

 

 

Culvert To Be Installed Near McDonald’s Restaurant

(Le Mars) — The City of Le Mars has hired a contractor to extend a box culvert along Bus. Highway 75 by McDonald’s. So, starting today, (Monday) the contractor will be closing the driveway by McDonald’s leaving the one access open by Yamaha Golf & Equipment, to get to McDonald’s and Bomgaars. The contractor will also be shutting down two of the traffic lanes for about 600 feet along where the work is being done . The traffic will all be moved over to the East side of Bus. 75 and leaving only one lane going south and one lane going north through that construction site.

 

 

School Board To Hear Report From Kluckholn Faculty

(Le Mars) — Members of the Le Mars Community Board of Education will hear a report this evening during their school board meeting from Kluckholn Elementary faculty regarding the implementation of “Win Time,” a professional learning
community program. School superintendent, Dr. Stephen Webner will discuss with the school board, the Le Mars Community school financial health indicator report. The school board will discuss the IASB employee relations conference
which was held on October 17th, and they will discuss the upcoming state school board convention scheduled for November 15th-17th.

 

 

 

Man Drowns In Missouri River

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – Authorities have recovered the body of a man believed to have drowned at the Sioux City Marina.
Police say the man had been acting bizarre at the marina early Sunday morning, but officers sent there couldn’t find him.
Around 10 a.m. a person working on a boat heard a splash and soon found the man in the marina’s Missouri River water. The person unsuccessfully tried to help the man, who slipped beneath the surface.
A dive team member eventually found the body. Police say the body was that of 34-year-old Allen Clay, who lived in Sioux City.

 

 

Divers Finally Able To Retrieve The Car That Drove Into the Missouri River

(Sioux City) — Also, during the weekend, authorities were finally able to retrieve that car that plunged into the Missouri River nearly a week ago. Due to the strong river currents and low visibility in the river, divers were not
able to get that car out. Once the vehicle was able to be pulled from the Missouri River, a family of three were found inside.

 

 

Lamb Theater Group Wants To Renovate Former KCAU Building

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – A performing arts group wants to buy and refurbish a historic building in downtown Sioux City, with plans for a 200-plus seat theater, cabaret-style bar and classrooms. The Sioux City Council will decide today whether to approve the Lamb Arts Regional Theatre’s project. The theater is seeking approval for a development agreement. The deal
would award the theater a $350,000 loan, which would be used to purchase the property from a private owner. The nonprofit plans to launch a fundraising campaign to repay the loan
and pay for the restoration.  The Lamb Theater group wishes to acquire the former KCAU television building located at 7th and Douglas Streets. City documents say the theater group has leased the former Webster School building for more than 30 years, but has outgrown the space. The downtown building has been vacant since February.

 

 

Petersen Elected As Democratic Leader For Iowa Senate

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa Democrats have elected a new leader in the state Senate. State Sen. Janet Petersen of Des Moines was chosen Sunday to be the new Democratic leader of the Iowa Senate. Petersen said she is honored to win the job. She is in her second term in the Senate after serving six terms in the Iowa House. Petersen has lived in Des Moines most of her life. In 2008, she co-founded an Iowa nonprofit called Healthy Birth Day that works to prevent stillbirths.
