Reynolds Talks About State Revenue Estimates

(Le Mars) — Iowa is expected to grow its revenue by about $33 million for the next fiscal year as projected earlier this month by the state’s revenue estimating commission. However, for the last couple of years the state revenue fell short of projections, causing the state legislature and Governor Reynolds to
borrow money from the state’s financial reserves. Governor Kim Reynolds stopped by the KLEM offices on Friday afternoon as part of her western Iowa campaign tour. The governor was asked if a portion of the expected revenue should be put
aside into the reserves?

Reynolds says each state agency was informed of the small revenue growth, and to
be prepared to scale back on their budget requests.

The state of Kansas, under the direction of Governor Sam Brownback implemented many of the same programs Reynolds has proposed, however, Kansas found themselves in financial trouble. Reynolds was asked how does Iowa’s situation differ from Kansas?

The Republican governor offers an explanation about the proposed revenue programs.

Court records say lawyers for 41-year-old Misty Ray filed a motion Friday mostly matching one filed earlier this month for her husband, 42-year-old Marc Ray. Both have pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, child endangerment
resulting in death, and other crimes.
The motions say the Rays can’t get fair trials in Dallas County because of extensive publicity. Misty Ray’s mother has made the same argument in her bid for a new trial location. Sixty-three-year-old Carla Bousman has pleaded not guilty to aiding and abetting child endangerment and other crimes.
An April 25 hearing has been scheduled on all three motions.

Lake To Be Refillled

OXFORD, Iowa (AP) – Re-digging has begun at a popular eastern Iowa lake that was drained last year due to bacteria and algae blooms.
The Iowa City Press-Citizen reports that Kent Park drained its lake as part of a $2.9 million restoration project seven years in the making.
Issues that contributed to the lake draining included runoff from livestock operations upstream; built up phosphorus from row crops and livestock in the park’s catch basins; and waste from geese.
Johnson County Conservation Department Director Larry Gullett says the “park is literally torn apart right now.”
Reversing the damage requires a major overhaul to the park. New catch basins have been built and the depths of the lake are being remade.
Park officials say it will be at least another year before the lake is
refilled and open for public use.
