Firefighters Respond To Fire At MOC-Floyd Valley Middle School

(Alton) — Fire officials from Alton and Orange City responded this afternoon to a fire alarm at the MOC-Floyd Valley Middle School at Alton. The alarm came in at about 1:00 p.m. Students had evacuated the building. Alton Fire Chief Quintin Van Es tells what had happened.

Van Es says smoke had entered some of the classrooms. Firefighters used fans to help ventilate the smoke from the school building.
School was dismissed, but officials say the school was already previously scheduled for an early out session.

 

 

Le Mars Police Warn Of Phone Scammers

(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Police Department has observed an increase in phone scams over the past few weeks. Some of the scams include a call from the IRS, Winning a lottery, and Family members in Jail. All of these scams have one thing in common. The “Scammer” will ask you to send them money electronically. Please contact the police department if you get a request for money. Police officials remind Le Mars residents, “If it seems to good to be true, it is likely a scam.”

 

 

Iowa Family Found Dead At Mexican Vacation Resort

CRESTON, Iowa (AP) – Investigators say the bodies of an Iowa couple and their two children have been found in a rented condo in Mexico.
The family was reported missing by relatives in their hometown of Creston early Friday, about a week after the family left for vacation. Creston police contacted the U.S. State Department, and the bodies were found during a welfare
check at the condo in Tulum.
In Iowa, Union County authorities identified the family as 41-year-old Kevin Sharp; his wife, 38-year-old Amy Sharp; and their children, 12-year-old Sterling and 7-year-old Adrianna.
Authorities say it wasn’t immediately clear what caused the deaths. Autopsy reports are pending.
The Creston News Advertiser reports the family flew to Cancun, Mexico, on March 14. According to her sister, Amy Sharp texted their mother the next day to say they’d reached Tulum. Relatives hadn’t heard from the family since then.

 

 

Iowa’s Unemployment Rate Holds Steady In February

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa’s unemployment rate remained at 2.9 percent in February.
Iowa Workforce Development announced Friday the rate remained unchanged from January even as the number of unemployed residents dropped slightly to 47,900
people. The number of people with jobs increased by 500 and stood at about 1.6 million.
Iowa’s rate was tied with Maine and Wisconsin for the nation’s sixth lowest.
The national unemployment rate in February was 4.1 percent.
