Police Release Updated Information Regarding Thursday Motorcycle Accident

(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Police Department has released additional information relating to the motorcycle accident that happened Thursday afternoon on Hawkeye Avenue/Business Highway 75. 18-year old Dane Klein of Hospers admits to falling asleep at the wheel and failed to see the vehicles in front of him were slowing down for an upcoming traffic light. Klein was
driving a 2008 Chevy Impala. Klein ran into the back of 62-year old Perry Swisher of Le Mars who was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle who then had his motorcycle pushed into the back of Mildred Chapman, age 68, of Le Mars.
Chapman was driving a 1998 Chevy Blazer. Swisher’s motorcycle then bounced off the rear bumper of Chapman’s vehicle and into the side of Brooke Pigott’s vehicle. Pigott is 22 years of age, and is from Marcus. She was driving a 2013 Chrysler 200. Minor damage was reported on the driver’s side door of
Pigott’s vehicle. Swisher was transported to Floyd Valley Emergency Room by the Le Mars Ambulance with non-life threatening injuries. Klein was given citations for failure to stop in a safe and secure distance. Klein’s vehicle sustained approximately $800 in damages. Chapman’s vehicle sustained
approximately $100 in damages, and Pigott’s vehicle had about $1,500 amount of damage. Swisher motorcycle sustained about $2,000 in damages.

 

 

 

FDA Tells Company Owned By Iowa Congressman To Clean Up Its Act

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The Food and Drug Administration is encouraging businesses not to use an Iowa company’s service that promises to hide information about safety violations. The FDA said this week that it’s aware of Tin Moon., a marketing company founded by U.S. Rep. Rod Blum and his business partner in 2016. The agency says companies should focus on
correcting their violations rather than hiding warnings from the public.

 

 

Scott County Bailiff Justified In Using Force On Inmate

DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) – The Scott County attorney says a court bailiff’s firing of his handgun was reasonable after a man wielding a wooden pole struck him in the face outside the courthouse. County Attorney Mike Walton said in a news release Thursday that bailiff Tim Hutcheson “believed his force was necessary to avoid injury or risk to his life or safety, or the
life or safety of others.”

 

 

Authorities Arrest Man After Fleeing From Accident

WATERLOO, Iowa (AP) – Authorities have arrested a man accused of fleeing after his vehicle injured his girlfriend’s 11-year-old daughter near their Waterloo home. Court records say James Smith is charged with leaving the scene of an injury accident, child endangerment causing serious injury, and
other crimes. The records don’t list an attorney for him. Police say the girl was injured April 18 when Smith drove out of the home’s driveway. Her mom is accused of lying to police about what happened.

 

 

Court Rules Former Deere and Company Factory Worker Cannot Sue Company

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa Supreme Court says a former Deere & Co. factory manager can’t sue the company under the Iowa Civil Rights Act because he worked and lived in China when he was disciplined for having sexual relationships with Chinese women who also worked at the factory. The ruling
establishes for the first time that the Iowa Civil Rights Act does not apply to circumstances occurring outside the state. The decision means Matthew Jahnke’s lawsuit against Illinois-based Deere will be dismissed.

 

 

Ferry Hired To Transport Vehicles Across Mississippi River While Bridge Is Closed

SABULA, Iowa (AP) – A car ferry from Iowa to Illinois could run in about a month as residents wait for the reopening of a bridge connecting the two states. Iowa Department of Transportation officials tell the Telegraph Herald that the department has found a contractor to provide ferry services from Sabula, Iowa, to Savanna, Illinois. services would operate during daylight
hours and the ferry could accommodate about 500 cars daily.
