Sioux County Jury Awards Family $29.5 Million In Malpractice Lawsuit

ORANGE CITY, Iowa (AP) – A jury has awarded $29.5 million to the family of a northwest Iowa woman who died after she had an allergic reaction to a dye she was given for a medical scan.
The Sioux County jury made the negligence award Wednesday to the family of 40-year-old Carrie DeJongh. She died June 9, 2015, after receiving the dye at Sioux Center Health in Sioux Center.
Her attorney Nicholas Rowley says DeJongh went into anaphylactic shock and lost consciousness upon receiving the contrast dye for a CT scan.
Rowley says Dr. Roy Slice gave her an antihistamine drug but didn’t immediately take her vital signs or administer epinephrine, which could have countered her shock.
The doctor and Sioux Center Health denied the negligence allegations.

Police Institute Employee Charged With Murder

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – The son and boss of an Iowa grandmother charged in a 1992 homicide say they’re stunned by her arrest and confident that she’s not the killer.
Authorities charged 55-year-old Annette Cahill two weeks ago with first-degree murder in the beating death of her friend Corey Wieneke of West Liberty.
They say the charge came after a new witness came forward against Cahill, who’s jailed on a $1 million bond.
Cahill has worked since 2009 as a proofreader at the Police Law Institute, which provides online training for police officers. Her boss, David Oliver, said her arrest came as a “complete and utter shock” because “this is not the person that I know.” He called Cahill “very pro-law enforcement.”
Cahill’s son, Jon McCrabb, recently started a GoFundMe campaign to help her legal defense. He says there’s “no doubt in any of our minds that she didn’t do this.”

Farmers Upset With EPA Director Scott Pruitt

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Environmental Protection Agency chief Scott Pruitt is being met with protests deep in Trump country, as corn farmers and ethanol producers complain his support for oil and gas is hurting their industries.
Midwest corn farmers are showing their unhappiness in rallies, on billboards and at meetings as Pruitt tours farm states this week.
Corn farmers accuse Pruitt of waffling on a promise by President
Donald Trump to boost use of ethanol in motor fuel.
The EPA says Pruitt has gone to the Midwest to hear out the farmers and ethanol producers. The agency says a court decision is responsible for some of the slump in ethanol demand.
The protests by farmers come as Pruitt faces a series of allegations of ethical misconduct back in Washington.
