Tornadoes Hit Central Iowa – Injures 17 People

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A flurry of unexpected tornadoes swept through central Iowa, injuring at least 17 people, flattening buildings in three cities and forcing a hospital evacuation.
Residents – and even weather forecasters – were taken by surprise Thursday as the tornadoes hit Marshalltown, Pella and Bondurant. Ten people were injured in Marshalltown and seven at a factory near Pella, but no deaths were reported.
National Weather Service meteorologist Alex Krull says forecasting models had showed only a slight chance of strong thunderstorms. Krull says if anything, meteorologists were expecting possibly large hail if strong storms developed.
Marshalltown appeared to have been hit the hardest. Brick walls
collapsed in the streets and roofs were blown off buildings. The only hospital in Marshalltown was damaged and patients were being transferred.

Reynolds Address Agricultural Issues

(Le Mars) — Thursday morning, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds visited with KLEM news during an exclusive interview about issues facing the state’s agriculture industry. Reynolds says she has been in touch with Trump Administration officials about how the tariffs and the trade war have negatively affected Iowa farmers.

The governor says there are two factors to consider during this trade war.

Reynolds says although the trade war hurts Iowa farmers, she says it is time the United States stand up to China for its long-term unfair trade practices.

Another way farmers are hurting is with the Environmental Protection Agency’s ruling on ethanol. Former E-P-A administrator Scott Pruitt had granted several waivers to oil refineries allowing them not to blend corn-based
ethanol with gasoline. Reynolds testified yesterday at a Renewable Fuels Standard hearing held by the E-P-A. She says her message was clear…no waivers should be granted when it comes to ethanol.

The Iowa Republican governor says a simple way to increase the volume approved by Congress for additional ethanol and other renewable fuels is to allow higher blends of ethanol to be used year round.
