City Council To Tour New Le Mars Police Station

(Le Mars) — The Le Mars City Council is scheduled to convene today at noon at the city council chambers. The city council has a short agenda for today’s meeting. They will amend chapter 36 of the city’s code relating to the Fire and Rescue Department. The city council is expected to approve the second reading to include the new position of Battalion Chief. The position of Battalion Chief will be third in line of command, under the Assistant
Chief and the Chief. The council will also amend the city code for Chapter 46 which relates to park regulations. The council is expected to approve the recreational trail as part of the city’s parks. However, unlike the parks, there is no closing time of 10:00 p.m. and no opening time of 6:00 a.m. Following the meeting at the city council chambers, the city leaders
will take a recess and convene again at the new Le Mars Police Headquarters, located on Business Highway 75 north. The city council is scheduled to tour the new police station lead by Police Chief Kevin Vande Vegte.

 

 

County Supervisors Will Not Meet This Week

(Le Mars) — Plymouth County Board of Supervisors are getting a jump start to the Thanksgiving Holiday as there will not be a meeting scheduled for the county governing board. The county supervisors next meeting will be held next Tuesday, November 27th beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the county courthouse
board room.

 

 

November Jury To Report For Jury Duty

(Le Mars) — Jurors will need to report to jury duty today at the Plymouth County Courthouse. They are needing to check in on the 3rd floor at the County Clerk of Court office beginning at 8:30 a.m.

 

 

Sheriff’s Office Investigates Semi Truck and Tanker Accident

(Merrill) — The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an accident that happened Sunday afternoon involving a semi truck and tanker trailer. The accident occurred on Highway 75, just north of Merrill, near Kestrel Avenue. Rescue units responded to the scene after learning the semi truck and tanker was lying on the driver’s side in the ditch. The driver,
Thomas Patrick Van Horsen of Sheldon may have had a medical issue prior to the crash. Van Horsen was transported by the Le Mars Ambulance to Mercy Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The 2015 Peterbilt truck and 2008 tanker trailer sustained substanial damage. The tanker was not hauling any flammable or corrosive materials. Assisting with the crash were the Le Mars Fire and Rescue Department, Le Mars Ambulance, Merrill Ambulance, Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Department of Transportation, along with an officer of the Iowa Department of Transportation Highway Department Motor
Vehicle Enforcement.

 

 

Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor Re-opens

(Le Mars) — The Wells Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor is open again, after the first phase of renovation is now completed. The ice cream parlor opened Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. Ice cream parlor manager, Brett Susemihl, talks about what people can see, and what is still being renovated.

Susemihl says some renovation and construction will continue while the ice cream parlor is open, but it is scheduled to close again in the spring to complete the multi-million project. Then the ice cream parlor will re-open in June in time for the annual Ice Cream Days Celebration and the Le Mars Sesquicentennial. Susemihl explains the work that still needs to be
completed.

The ice cream parlor manager says for those people wanting to buy a sweet treat during this week will be able to get a discount on their ice cream purchase.

Visitors to the partially renovated ice cream parlor will notice several conceptions and photos on the walls as to what the popular tourist attraction will look like once the construction project is completed.

The business hours for the Wells Blue Bunny Ice Cream Parlor are Monday through Saturday, 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 12:00 noon to 6:00 p.m.

 

 

Allegation of Sexual Abuse Directed Toward State Senator

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A woman has filed an ethics complaint against Iowa legislator Nate Boulton, detailing allegations she initially made in May that led the lawmaker to drop his campaign for governor.
The Des Moines Register reported Monday the woman filed the
complaint Saturday with the Iowa Senate. The complaint alleges that one night at a bar in November 2015, Boulton repeatedly grabbed her buttocks.
The Register had previously reported the woman’s allegations as well as allegations from two other women regarding incidents more than a decade ago. After the stories were published, Boulton dropped his bid for the Democratic nomination for governor. Despite calls that he resign, Boulton opted to remain in the Senate.

 

 

2020 President Campaigns Get Started

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – The 2018 midterms are barely history, but the next campaign is already in full swing in Iowa.
That’s because the state is home to the first caucus of the 2020
presidential nominating season.
And in the two weeks since the election, potential White House
contenders have intensified their effort to recruit operatives who can help them navigate Iowa.
The competition is shaping up to be especially fierce because the
field could include as many as two dozen candidates.

 

 

2018 Harvest Nearing Completion

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa farmers are nearing the end of this year’s harvest of corn and soybeans.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture reported Monday that 91 percent of the corn crop had been harvested by Sunday. That matches last year’s harvest but was three days behind the five-year average.
About 97 percent of the soybean crop had been harvested, which is just behind last year’s 98 percent and the five-year average of 99 percent.
The harvest progress came despite wintry weather, including
temperatures in eastern Iowa that were up to 12 degrees below normal. Some areas also saw rain and snow.
