Remsen St. Mary’s Makes A Three-peat To State Tournament

ORANGE CITY — Remsen St. Mary’s connected on 9-of-11 foul shots in overtime Monday night and it was good enough for the Hawks to punch their ticket back to Des Moines with a 51-45 overtime victory over No. 8 South O’Brien in the 1A Sub-State final at the M-O-C/Floyd Valley gym. St. Mary’s led by five at
halftime but South O’Brien rallied for a three-point advantage after three quarters. R-S-M won a low-scoring fourth quarter 6-3, tying the game on Blaine Harpenau’s drive-in bucket with a minute to play in regulation.
Brayden Ricke, who was limited to just three points through the first four quarters, hit all four foul shots in overtime. Harpenau hit the only overtime field goal to break the 40-all tie and was fouled on the play, connecting on the free throw for a 43-40 lead. St. Mary’s would never trail again. Harpenau led all scorers with 15 points while Spencer Schorg dropped in 14, 11 of those before halftime. Jackson Louscher had 14 points for South O’Brien and Zeke Lundquist added 12. Remsen St. Mary’s (19-6) will make their third straight trip to the 1A State tournament next Monday at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. South O’Brien’s season ends at 20-5.
