City Street Intersection Construction Finally Completed

(Le Mars) — The city street intersection at 2nd Avenue Northwest and 1st Street Northwest is now open.  Construction was completed on Monday, July 8th.  The intersection had been closed since May 29th.  City Public Works Superintendent, Scott Kniep says continuous rains had delayed the completion of the construction.  The intersection is a busy intersection as it is near the Postal Service Office.  Kneip says the problem was the deteriorating storm sewer system beneath the street, causing rainwater to erode the ground below the street.  Kneip says the intersection consisted of pavement and a layer of asphalt on top.  Barricades were first put up calling attention to the storm sewer drainage problem last autumn.  City officials had wanted to repair the intersection a year ago, however, work had to be delayed until such time the intersection of Highway 3 and 75 was completed.  1st Street North became the detour route during the construction period of the Highway 3 and 75 intersection.
