MONDAY RESULTS – August 12

AP-SportsMinute

NEW YORK (AP) – The Yankees’ Gleyber Torres hit one home run in the opener and two more in the nightcap to help New York sweep a doubleheader against the visiting Baltimore Orioles. Torres set a big league record with his fifth multihomer game against a team in a season, breaking a tie with Ralph Kiner, Gus Zernial and Roy Sievers.

CLEVELAND (AP) – Carlos Santana homered leading off the ninth inning to send the Cleveland Indians to a 6-5 win over the fast-fading Boston Red Sox and back into first-place in the AL Central. The Indians moved past the idle Minnesota Twins and are alone in first for the first time since April 19.

SAN DIEGO (AP) – Avisail Garcia had a two-run home run among his three hits and Matt Duffy had four hits and three RBIs for the Tampa Bay Rays, who benefited from a Padres bullpen meltdown in a 10-4 victory in their first game in San Diego since 2004. The Rays, currently holding the second AL wild card spot, won their fourth game overall and their eighth straight on the road.

DENVER (AP) – Over the course of 13 pitches in the sixth inning, Arizona went from trailing 6-3 to leading 7-6 in Denver Monday night. Jake Lamb started the comeback with a solo shot off reliever Jake McGee. Nick Ahmed later hit a two-run homer and Carson Kelly followed with a solo shot and the Diamondbacks beat the Rockies, 8-6.

UNDATED (AP) – A federal judge has approved an amended settlement in a class-action concussion lawsuit against the NCAA that will establish a 50-year medical-monitoring program for college athletes. The case originated with a claim against the NCAA in 2011 by former Eastern Illinois football player Adrian Arrington. The case was later consolidated with other claims.

THURSDAY RESULTS – August 15

WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — The 2019 Little League World Series opened Thursday in South Williamsport, Pennsylvania.  However, rain washed out three of the four games scheduled for opening day.  The game involving the team from Coon Rapids, Minnesota and Bowling Green, Kentucky was one of the games rained out.  They’ll now play at 12-noon (CDT) Friday.

There is some local interest in the team from Coon Rapids Andover, Minnesota.  Their second baseman, Maddy Freking, is the daughter of Le Mars graduate Richard Freking, who was a multi-sports athlete at Le Mars Community in the early ’90s.  There is a picture of Maddy on the picture section of our KLEM webpage.
