Two Le Mars Community FFA Students Awarded American Degree

(Le Mars) — The Le Mars FFA Chapter prides itself on keeping the blue jacket traditions alive while fulfilling the motto of Learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live, and living to serve. Recently, two of their members were honored with the official approval to receive their American FFA Degree this fall. Claire Ohlrichs and Whitney TenNapel, both former LCHS bulldogs and heavily involved FFA members, are two out of 126 in Iowa to receive this outstanding honor for the 2020-2021 year. The American FFA Degree is awarded to members that have demonstrated the highest level of commitment to FFA, while also showing tremendous success in their Supervised Agricultural Experiences.

Claire is currently a sophomore at Iowa State University studying Animal Science and specializing in food safety and quality assurance. Throughout her first year at Iowa State, she has become immensely involved in the College of Agriculture and Life Science while being an active member of Sigma Alpha and Block and Bridle, while also enhancing her knowledge in the meat science field while interning with Premium Iowa Pork. Her Supervised Agricultural Experience emphasized bovine science and beef entrepreneurship with her small cow-calf herd on her family’s farm operation.

Whitney is in her junior year at South Dakota State University where she is majoring in Dairy Manufacturing with minors in Agricultural Business and Animal Science. She enjoys being an active student at SDSU while participating in Block and Bridle, Little International, and the Dairy Science Club. She has continued to broaden her horizons in the dairy science industry while completing internships with AgroPur in Hull as a Cheese Production and Food Safety Intern. Whitney’s Supervised Agricultural Experience focused on sheep production with an emphasis in sheep entrepreneurship as well. Her passion for the sheep industry led her to taking on the challenge of raising her own flock and selling the offspring to other producers throughout the area.

On the normal occasion, each American Degree recipient will get to sport the beloved blue corduroy one last time while walking across the stage at the National FFA Convention in October. However, due to the circumstances, the convention is being held virtually this year instead of in downtown Indianapolis. Each American Degree recipient will be recognized at the time of the virtual convention in late October. The Le Mars FFA Chapter couldn’t be prouder of these two outstanding agriculturalists and are excited to see the bright future each of these young women have ahead of them.
