FRIDAY RESULTS – October 9

(high school football)

SIOUX CITY — Senior Carter Arens ran for three touchdowns and a two-point conversion to lead the Le Mars Bulldogs to their first win of the season, 21-7, over Bishop Heelan Friday night to close out the regular season for both schools.  Arens scored on a quarterback sneak with 57-seconds to play in the first quarter for a 6-0 lead.  After a scoreless second quarter, the Crusaders capitalized on an interception by Cyrus Valesquez that set the Heelan offense up at the 8-yard line.  Quarterback Nathan Favors scored from nine yards out and the extra point kick by George Tsinbanos put the Crusaders on top 7-6 with 3:39 to play in the third quarter.  Le Mars responded with a ten-play, 79-yard drive that Arens capped with a four yard run.  Arens added a two-point conversion run to reclaim the lead at 14-7 with 11:29 to play in the game.  Carter Arens sealed the outcome with a 52-yard run with 1:23 left and Elijah Dougherty kicked the extra point for the final 14-point winning margin.  Arens led a 200-yard rushing attack with 126 yards on 18 carries.  Le Mars finishes the regular season at 1-5 and 1-4 in district play and now awaits the release of the playoff pods at noon on Saturday for the Class 3A first round next Friday night.  Bishop Heelan finished at 1-6 and 0-5 in district play.  It marked the first back-to-back victories in this Heelan/Le Mars rivalry for the Bulldogs.  Heelan still holds a 12-3 advantage in the series though.

LE MARS — Quarterback Mason Warnke scored on runs of 1 and 40 yards and also threw a 35-yard TD-pass to Micha Davis to lead South O’Brien to a 32-12 victory over Gehlen Catholic Friday night, putting a damper on the Jays homecoming celebration.  Connor Kraft threw a pair of touchdown passes to Keaton Bonderson for Gehlen’s two scores.  Their first hook-up was a seven-yarder in the first quarter that tied the game at 6-6.  The Wolverines scored a pair of second quarter touchdowns to take an 18-6 lead into the halftime break.  Kraft and Bonderson hooked up again in the third quarter on an 18-yard scoring connection to close to within 18-12 after three quarters.  Jett Keith scored on a 24-yard run with 8:18 to play and Warnke’s second touchdown run capped the scoring late in the final period. The Jays were outscored 48-13 in the fourth quarter this season.  Connor Kraft threw for 218 yards on 12-of-20 passing while Keaton Bonderson caught 11 passes for 203 yards.  The offense was pretty one dimensional as the Jays rushed for only 33 yards.  The Wolverines ran for 265 yards while rolling up 340 yards of offense.  Gehlen Catholic closes the regular season with a 2-4 record and finished 2-2 in district play.  They learn their playoff assignment at noon Saturday when the Iowa High School Athletic Association releases the post season pairings for next Friday, October 16th.
