Le Mars Historical Preservation Commission Restores Street Lights

(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Historical Preservation Commission recently took on the challenge to restore two old street lights that served the St. John’s Lutheran Church in Le Mars. Stuart Dekkenga serves on the Historical Preservation Commission and was responsible for the restoration of the street lamps.

The light poles are now standing near the parking lot between the Murphy-Collins law firm office and the former Frontier Communications building. Dekkenga says the Historical Preservation Commission had to modify the light poles. The lights now resemble the Old English look when street lights were using gas or candles to illuminate an area.

Dekkenga says the original light poles were shorten, and he talks about other modifications that occurred with the street lights.

The historical preservation commissioner talks about the condition of the street lights when they first started, and credits city workers for their assistance with the restoration project.

Dekkenga says the entire restoration of the street lamps took over a year to complete.
