Holiday Happenings

(REMSEN) -- Just because the weekend has passed, doesn't mean the holiday fun has to end.  It's time for an Old Fashioned Christmas in Remsen tonight (Monday 12/5) from 5:30 to 8:30pm.   Karen Harnack of the Remsen Chamber of Commerce says that traditional holiday activities will be plentiful including fires ready for marshmallow toasting, under the supervision of the Remsen Fire Department of course.

At 6:15 Santa will be there to light the Remsen Christmas Tree in Town Square.

Also this week is the Marcus Festival of Trees, Tuesday the 6th through Friday the 9th culminating in Friday's Hometown Christmas. The events are being held from 5-8pm at the Marcus Community Center.  Friday's activities include a visit from Santa, Fire Department Chili Feed, horse drawn sleigh rides and the Kid's Mall at the Community Center where kids can shop for their own gifts to give.

 

 (LE MARS) -- Holiday fun for the whole family starts off with a bang this weekend with events all over Northwest Iowa.  

  Pioneer Village will begin following the Children's Parade this Saturday.  The Children's Parade steps off at 6pm at 8th St SE and heads downtown on Central Avenue in Le Mars. The Arts Center will be open before and after the parade providing warmth and selling coffee and cocoa.  Pioneer Village opens at the fairgrounds immediately following.  Organizer Bonita Davidson tells us about what we can expect to experience at this 20 year Le Mars event.

Hot chocolate, candy canes, popcorn balls, popcorn, cookies and coffee are all available at no charge in Century Hall and are provided by various community groups.  Free will donations will be accepted.  There's free pork sandwiches being served in the building next door on Saturday night, and groups will be serving hot dogs after Saturday. 
After you get some food in you, Bonita says to stroll through the village lit by over 10,000 lights and head to the round barn.

Pioneer Village is open from 5:30 to 8:30 this Saturday and Sunday, December 4th and 5th, as well as next weekend, the 10th and 11th.

 

(LE MARS) -- The Plymouth County Historical Museum is hosting its second annual

Manger Museum exhibit.  More than 100 nativity sets will be on display this

coming Sunday (12/4) afternoon at the museum.  Delores Burkhart along with her late

husband, Ron, started the nativity exhibit.  She explains how the exhibit first

got started.

Also at the museum this Sunday will be three local pianists providing seasonal

music for everyone's enjoyment.  The exhibit opens at 1:00 p.m. and will be on

display through January 8th.   

 

(ORANGE CITY) -- Le Mars isn't the only place getting in the holiday spirit this weekend...It's time for Sinterklaas to come to town in Orange City. Festivities are this afternoon (Saturday, 12/3) beginning at 3pm downtown Orange City in Windmill Park.  Cheryl Buntsma helps organize the Sinterklaas day festivities.  She explains the history behind the Dutch tradition of Sinterklaas.

Following the parade with Sinterklaas from Windmill Park to City Hall there will be a puppet show, games and treats.  And in the spirit of helping others the Orange City Growth Organization will have a Pizza Feed at City Hall after the festivities at City Hall from 4:30 to 6pm.  A free will donation will be taken up with proceeds benefiting The Bridge in Orange City.

In addition to today's Sinterklaas Day Celebration, Northwestern College has Vespers services at 7pm both today and tomorrow.  Northwestern's Chamber Ensembles Concert in Friday, December 9th at 7:30pm.  Dordt College also begins their season of holiday concerts this weekend with a Chorale of Lessons and Carols Sunday night at 8pm.  The Jazz Band Concert is Tuesday, December 6th at 7:30 and the Instrumental Ensemble Concert is Friday, the 9th at 7:30.  All Dordt concerts are in the BJ Haan Auditorium in Sioux Center.
