SAC CITY, Iowa (AP) - Authorities say new homeowners have found what appears to be skeletal remains in the basement of a house in Sac City.
Police say the remains were found on Monday when the owners were cleaning in the basement. The remains were sent to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy.
No other details were released. A telephone call to Sac City Police Chief John Thomsen was not returned Tuesday afternoon.
The Sac County sheriff's office and the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation are assisting in the investigation.

68,000 Absentee Ballots Not Yet Returned

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A spokesman for the Iowa secretary of state's office says about 670,000 people voted early, but roughly 68,000 absentee ballots requested by voters hadn't been turned in
by Monday night.
Spokesman Chad Olsen says the number of absentee ballots not submitted sounds like a big number, but the percentage not returned is typical of past elections.
Olsen calls it "nothing new."
He says Iowa was setting a record for early voting, with up to 45 percent of people voting outside the normal polling place.
People with absentee ballots could mail them up until Monday.  Such ballots won't be counted if mailed today, but they can drop off ballots off in person.

Jackie Plantz Chosen As Employee of the Month

(Le Mars) -- The Le Mars Chamber of Commerce has selected its November employee of the month. This time the honor is awarded to Jackie Plantz of the I-M-L Containers.  The nomination submitted by Debbie Gibson says Jackie was hired two years ago to handle phones and backup administrative assistant with the plan to eventually take over some of the responsibilities permanently.  There were times when she had very little to do, but was asked to be patient. Being very eager, and quick to learn, Jackie was always asking for more work and the opportunity to help out.  We knew then we had hired an excellent team player.  Her easy going manner was a good fit for our office.  Within the first year, Jackie took over all the customer service and soon after the purchasing and planning.  Jackie handled the rapid company growth by always stepping up where needed and did not hesitate to work overtime to get the work done to meet our customer's needs.  Our congratulations to Jackie Plantz of I-M-L Containers for being named the Chamber's employee of the month.
