KLEM Local Schedule (week of January 21)

MONDAY RESULTS - January 21

(high school basketball)

(LE MARS) -- The Gehlen Catholic boys basketball team has been flying under the radar for much of the season.  That will probably change after the Jays stunned number-two Storm Lake St. Mary's 72-57 before a standing room only crowd at the Reardon Family gym Monday night, knocking the Panthers from the ranks of unbeaten.  Gehlen has now stretched their winning streak to 12 straight since losing back-to-back games in late November.  The Jays fought their way to a nine-point lead by halftime and extended the advantage to 14 midway through the third quarter.  The Panthers never got closer than eight after that.  Blake Wiltgen led a balanced scoring attack with 22, Colton Kneip had a career-best 17, Michael Whitehead 16 and Alex Kellen 10.  Luke Lenhart and Kennedy Drey, two key starters on the St. Mary's state title team of two seasons ago, led the Panthers with 26 and 18 respectively.   Gehlen improves to 13-and-2 for the season and now turn their attention to a road trip at Remsen-Union Friday night, looking to avenge one of their November losses.

Senior Emily Holtgrewe set a new school record with seven three-pointers Monday night to return the 14th-rated Gehlen girls to the win column with a 56-34 victory over the Lady Panthers.  Holtgrewe finished with 21 points.  Katelin Langel added 12 with Hannah Sitzmann and Alison Schnepf scoring eight each.  Sitzmann was playing against some ex-teammates.  She played basketball at Storm Lake St. Mary's last season before transferring to Gehlen at the semester break.  The Lady Jays improve to 11-and-4 for the season heading into their War Eagle Conference date at Remsen-Union Friday night.

(HULL) -- Top-rated Western Christian closed the game on a 16-3 run to pull away from a pesky Le Mars team that was still within eleven points with 4:39 to play in the game Tuesday night at Hull before the unbeaten Wolfpack won 80-55 over the Lady Bulldogs.  The victory improves Western to 16-and-0 for the season and 10-and-0 in the Lakes Conference.  Brooke Wolterstorff led a balanced Wolfpack scoring attack with 17 points.  Jamie Gesink scored 14 off the bench and Kim Kroeze added 13.  Emily Pick and Molly Renken scored 15 each to pace Le Mars, which falls to 5-and-10 for the season and 5-and-5 in league play.

Michael Den Herder hit a pair of free throws with 18 seconds to play and Western Christian withstood a final three-point attempt by Brenden Collins to hold on for a 62-59 win over Le Mars, sweeping the season series and opening up a two-game lead in the Lakes Conference boys race.  The Wolfpack improves their season record to 14-and-1 and their conference mark to 10-and-0.  The loss halts a six-game winning streak for Le Mars and drops the Bulldogs to 10-and-4 for the season and 8-and-2 in league play.  Six-foot-six inch, Tyler Feenstra, had 23 points to lead all scorers for Western while Le Mars countered with a little more balance, getting 17 from sophomore Tyler Borchers, 13 from Gabe Rahn and 10 from Kyle Dolph.

Le Mars travels to Spencer Friday night for a Lakes Conference doubleheader.

(SPENCER) -- The Le Mars girls returned to the victory column Friday with a 52-35 win at Spencer.  Molly Renken led the way with 13 points and Mary Kate Eckstaine added 11 for the Lady Bulldogs.  Le Mars limited Spencer to 14 points in the second half to extend a 26-21 halftime advantage to a 17-point win.  The victory improves the Lady Bulldogs to 6-and-10 for the season and 6-and-5 in the Lakes Conference.

The Le Mars boys bounced back from their loss to Western Christian Tuesday night with a 62-49 victory over Spencer.  The Bulldogs trailed 32-26 at the half but held Spencer scoreless for eleven minutes in the second half to turn the game around.  Jake Irwin led four in double figures with 16 for Le Mars.  Tyler Borchers had 14 and Kyle Dolph and Parker Rolfes ten each.  Matt Finnern led Spencer with 15.   The Bulldogs improve to 11-and-4 for the season and 9-and-2 in the Lakes Conference.

Le Mars travels to Cherokee Tuesday night for a Lakes Conference doubleheader that will be featured on KLEM.

(REMSEN) -- Remsen-Union built a 15-point first half lead and then had to hold off a furious fourth quarter rally by Gehlen Catholic to beat the Jays 63-61 Friday night in a War Eagle Conference boys basketball match-up in Remsen.  The win was the second this season for the Rockets over the Jays.  R-U nipped Gehlen 49-46 two months ago in Le Mars, a night after the Jays had played a four-overtime game at Trinity Christian.  The loss Friday night ended Gehlen's 12-game winning streak and dropped the Jays into a first place tie for the War Eagle Conference lead with Unity Christian at 7-and-1.  The Jays are 13-and-3 for the season.  Remsen-Union improves to 15-and-3 for the season and 7-and-2 in league play.  The Rockets led 53-43 with six minutes to play before Michael Whitehead led the Jays final push with eleven of his game-high 25 points in the final quarter.  His two three-pointers in the final minute and a-half of the game drew Gehlen to within 62-61 with 15 seconds to play.  R-U's Austen Stock connected on only one of two free throw shots for a 63-61 lead with eight seconds to play.  Blake Wiltgen's three-point attempt at the buzzer rimmed in  and out as the Rocket fans breathed a sigh of relief.  Wiltgen finished with 11 points for Gehlen and sophomore Alex Kellen had 13.  Eight missed free throws proved costly for the Jays who also seemed to struggle from the perimeter Friday night.  Tanner Hilbrands had 22 and Cam Kuchel 16 to lead Remsen-Union.  The Gehlen loss came just five days after the Jays knocked number-two Storm Lake St. Mary's from the ranks of unbeaten with a 72-57 win and a week after they'd beaten Unity Christrian to take over the league lead.

The number-14 Gehlen Catholic girls used a 19-2 first half run to grab control of their War Eagle Conference match-up with Remsen-Union and the Lady Jays beat the Lady Rockets for the 13th consecutive time 57-36 Friday night.  Gehlen led by 30 points going into the final quarter.  Hannah Sitzmann had 14 for the Lady Jays, Katelin Langel added 13 and Alsion Schnepf 12.  Emily Holtgrewe dropped in nine.  Hailey Loutsch had 12 for R-U. Gehlen improves to 12-and-4 for the season and 5-and-3 in the War Eagle Conference.  Remsen-Union falls to 6-and-12 with a 2-and-7 league mark.

Gehlen hosts Spalding Catholic Tuesday and Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn Friday in their final two home games of the regular season.
