NEW ORLEANS - Matthew Stafford was 22 of 25 for 254 yards, three first-half touchdowns and no interceptions as the Detroit Lions held off the Saints 35-27 at New Orleans. Stafford hit Golden Tate for a pair of TDs while the Lions were building a 28-3 lead. Drew Brees (breez) fueled the Saints' second-half rally and was 34 of 52 for 341 yards, three touchdowns and no interceptions.

MIAMI BEACH BOWL - (25) Western Kentucky 45, South Florida 35

MIAMI - Brandon Doughty passed for 461 yards and three touchdowns in leading No. 25 Western Kentucky to a 45-35 win over South Florida in the Miami Beach Bowl this afternoon. Anthony Wales rushed for 105 yards and two touchdowns, including a 42-yarder with 5:05 left. The Hilltoppers trailed by 14 before earning their sixth straight win and ending the season 12-2.

UNDATED - Clemson's Dabo Swinney is The Associated Press college football coach of the year after leading the top-ranked Tigers to a 13-0 regular season.  Swinney received 35 of 60 votes from the AP Top 25 media panel. Iowa's Kirk Ferentz was second with 10.

(high school wrestling)

SPENCER  -- Results of an autopsy done on 18-year-old Austin Roberts, the Spencer high school wrestler that collapsed and died last weekend during the Spencer Invitational, were released Tuesday.  The report only indicated that the results were inconclusive and their would be a further review of the results.  Funeral services will be held Monday, December 28th at Spencer high school with the visitation to be held on Sunday at the high school gym.

THURSDAY RESULTS - December 24

BAHAMAS BOWL - Western Michigan 45, Middle Tennessee 31
HAWAII BOWL - San Diego State 42, Cincinnati 7

NASSAU, Bahamas — Jamauri Bogan rushed for 215 yards and four touchdowns to power Western Michigan past Middle Tennessee 45-31 in the Bahamas Bowl.  It's the first bowl victory in seven tries for the Broncos, who finished the season 8-5. Richie James had two touchdown catches and one touchdown run for 7-6 Middle Tennessee.

HONOLULU — San Diego dominated the Hawaii Bowl as the Aztecs scored TDs on a kickoff, an interception and a halfback option en route to a 42-7 rout of Cincinnati. The 11-3 Aztecs went ahead to stay when Rashaad Penny returned the opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. Damontae Kazee's eighth interception of the season set up Donnell Pumphrey's 16-yard halfback-option pass to Dakota Gordon for a score, and defensive lineman Alex Barrett returned Hayden Moore's third interception 43 yards for a TD that put the Aztecs ahead 42-0  with 9:04 to play.

OAKLAND, Calif. — Sebastian Janikowski hit a 31-yard field goal with 8:05 left in overtime before the Oakland Raiders stopped the Chargers on downs to complete a 23-20 triumph against San Diego. Derek Carr's 3-yard touchdown pass to Michael Crabtree and two-yard toss to Seth Roberts on the two-point conversion put the Raiders ahead 20-17 with 4:42 to play in regulation. That was enough time for Philip Rivers to march the Chargers down field and set up Josh Lambo's 45-yard field goal with 55 seconds left.

PHILADELPHIA — Kirk Cousins threw for a season-high 365 yards and four touchdowns as the Washington Redskins clinched the NFC East, beating Philadelphia 38-24. Cousins tossed his first two scoring strikes to Jordan Reed, who had nine receptions for 129 yards. DeAngelo Hall put the Skins in control by returning DeMarco Murray's fumble 17 yards for a TD late in the third quarter about 1 1/2 minutes after Murray's four-yard touchdown got the Eagles within 23-17.
