(LeMars) — The Environmental Protection Agency is in LeMars drilling holes to test the soil for chemical compounds. The drilling is a follow up to earlier tests performed. City administrator Scott Langel says the EPA has confined its testing of boring small holes within city hall and outside in the city hall parking lot. He says in earlier testing,the EPA detected a chemical that is common with metal fabrication. Langel says the chemical is probably from a business that was located near the railroad more than a century ago.
(LeMars) — More ice cream cones are coming to LeMars. The LeMars Chamber of Commerce and Main Street Association now say the city will be able to show off 42 of the fiberglass ice cream cones that are uniquely painted and seen at various locations around town. Mary Reynolds says the ten latest ice cream cones will be placed in front of businesses, schools and even parks.
Reynolds believes the latest ten ice cream cones will be on display sometime in the spring.
(LeMars) — City officials have extended the hours for the twig and grass site at Riverview Complex by one hour. As of today, the Wednesday hours will be from noon until 6:00 p.m. Saturday’s hours remain the same at 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
CLEGHORN, Iowa (AP) – A farm equipment plant in Cleghorn plans to be back in operation today after a fire caused significant damage there. No injuries were reported in the Wetherell Manufacturing fire, which apparently was started by a welder’s torch Monday night. Officials say a spark smoldered in some insulation before catching fire early yesterday.
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – The Nebraska-based Boys Town organization is opening an office in Sioux City as it expands to provide in-home services to help at-risk families in northwest Iowa and northeast Nebraska.
Boys Town says it was selected by the Iowa Department of Human Services, and anticipates helping over 500 families.
A ribbon cutting is scheduled in Sioux City on Oct. 26. Boys Town is national organization dedicated to helping children and families. It’s headquartered at Boys Town, a suburb of Omaha.
It was founded in 1917 by a Roman Catholic priest, the Rev. Edward Flanagan, and made famous by the 1938 Academy Award-winning movie “Boys Town” that starred Mickey Rooney and Spencer Tracy.
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Gov. Terry Branstad says the Federal Emergency Management Agency has reconsidered its decision and has granted Iowa’s request for flood aid for five of six counties along
the Missouri River.
Branstad received word from FEMA on Tuesday that the Federal Individual Assistance Program would be made available for Fremont, Harrison, Mills, Monona and Pottawattamie counties. FEMA did not approve the request for Woodbury County.
The program helps homeowners, renters and businesses by providing grants and loans.
Branstad spokesman Tim Albrecht says FEMA didn’t give a reason for not including Woodbury County. But he says the county did not have the level of damage that the other five counties sustained from a summer of flooding.
