(SIOUX CITY) — The top-rated (4A) Bishop Heelan girls basketball team survived a scare from unrated Le Mars Tuesday night, winning 56-46 at the ‘Pit’ in Sioux City. The two teams were tied at 37-all with 5:53 to play before the Crusaders used a full-court trapping defense to gain the upper hand. MaKayla Augustine knocked down 18 points for Bishop Heelan and Jenna Bork added 15. Molly Renken led all scorers with a career-high 20 for Le Mars. The Lady Bulldogs fall to 2-and-6 for the season and Bishop Heelan hits the holiday break at 7-and-1. The number-six rated (3A) Bishop Heelan boys beat Le Mars 57-42 Tuesday behind Shane Graves’ 21 points and Kyle Heaton’s 17. Graves connected on four three’s in the decisive third quarter and scored 14 of the Crusaders’ 16 points that quarter as Heelan opened up a 20-point lead late in the quarter. Le Mars ran off ten unanswered points to pull to within ten with seven minutes to play before the Crusaders regained control of the contest and won for the fourth time in six games. Le Mars falls to 4-and-3 and have dropped three of their last four games. Jake Irwin had 15 points to lead the Bulldogs scoring attack with Kyle Dolph adding eight and Tanner Anthony six. Le Mars did win the J-V boys game 48-42 behind Tyler Paulson’s 24 points. Le Mars closes out their pre-Christmas schedule Friday at home against Cherokee in a Lakes Conference girl/boy doubleheader.
(LE MARS) — Remsen St. Mary’s handed eighth-rated (1A) Gehlen Catholic their first loss of the season 41-37 in a girls War Eagle Conference match-up Tuesday night at the Reardon Family gym in Le Mars. Alexis Bunkers keyed the win with 14 points with Paige Harpenau adding 11. Katelin Langel and Bailey Wiltgen had nine each for the Lady Jays. Gehlen falls to 7-and-1 for the season and 4-and-1 in the W-E-C. Michael Whitehead and Blake Wiltgen combined for 29 points to lead the Gehlen Catholic boys to a 67-43 War Eagle Conference win over the Remsen St. Mary’s boys. Whitehead had a game-high 19 points and Wiltgen added 10. Tyler Delperdang had 12 to pace the Hawks. The win was the fifth in a row for Gehlen to improve their record to 6-and-2 and 5-and-0 in the league. Gehlen hosts Storm Lake St. Mary’s Thursday before closing out their pre-Christmas schedule at Akron-Westfield Friday.

(LE MARS) — Le Mars swept their final Lakes Conference doubleheader before the Christmas break, beating Cherokee 56-22 in the girls game and 75-28 in the boys game at the Bulldogs’ new gym Friday night. The victories stopped two-game losing streaks for both. The Le Mars girls scored the first 11 points and roared to a 36-7 halftime lead before settling on a 34-point victory. Eleven of the thirteen players that saw action in the game for the Lady Bulldogs scored at least one point. Emily Ellefson had ten to lead a balanced scoring attack with Holly Schneider and Carolyn Ahlers adding eight each. Emily Haselhoff had seven for the Braves. The Le Mars boys also had things in hand by halftime, leading 50-12 at the break. Jake Irwin led the Bulldogs with 16 points. Eric Wilkie had nine for the Braves. The Le Mars girls improve to 3-and-6 for the season and 3-and-2 in the Lakes Conference at the Christmas break while the Le Mars boys are 5-and-3 with a 4-and-1 Lakes Conference mark. The Bulldogs return to action January 4 at Estherville/Lincoln Central.
(AKRON) — The Gehlen Catholic boys won their sixth straight, scoring the first eleven points before rolling to a 21-2 lead after a quarter and a 44-16 advantage by halftime. The Jays kept Akron-Westfield winless at 0-and-8 with a 64-30 victory. Blake Wiltgen and Colton Kneip had 16 points each, both career highs, and Michael Whitehead added 13. Chance Hoffman had 12 for the Westerners. The Gehlen girls rebounded from their first loss of the season Tuesday night against Remsen St. Mary’s with a 54-34 win over Akron-Westfield Friday in Akron. The Westerners jumped out to a 9-3 lead before Gehlen went on a 19-2 run to take a 25-14 lead by halftime. Katelin Langel had 15 points and Emily Holtgrewe 10 to lead the Lady Jays scoring attack. Hannah Sitzmann and Alison Schnepf had nine each. Sarah Schroeder had 12 for the Westerners. The Gehlen girls improve to 8-and-1 for the season at the holiday break and the Gehlen boys are 7-and-2. The Akron-Westfield girls fall to 2-and-7. Gehlen returns to action on January 3rd when the girls play at Hinton while the boys play Hinton on January 4th in the CNOS Classic at Sioux City.
