(LE MARS) — The Le Mars boys have played four games in their new gym this season and two of the four have gone to multiple overtimes to decide. The Bulldogs outlasted Sergeant Bluff-Luton 82-78 in four overtimes Monday night to improve to 7-and-3 for the season. Le Mars beat Spencer in two overtimes in December. The Dogs trailed much of the night before rallying for the victory over the Warriors. The two were deadlocked 56-56 at the end of regulation, 61-61 after the first overtime, 64-all after two overtimes and 73-73 after the third overtime. Tyler Borchers sent the game into overtime with a game-tying basket after a charging foul on Thomas Wisecup negated a basket for S-B-L. Borchers then nailed down the victory with a pair of free throws in the final seven seconds of the fourth overtime. Six players fouled out of the contest and the two teams combined to miss 30 of the 74 foul shots attempted. Tyler Borchers led Le Mars with 18 points with Kyle Dolph adding 16 and Tyler Paulson 13. The Bulldogs’ leading scorer Jake Irwin was checked to nine points. by the S-B-L defense. Nathan Glisar led the Warriors with 19. The Sergeant Bluff-Luton girls rallied in the final two minutes to beat the Le Mars girls 46-41 in the front half of the non-conference doubleheader Monday. After five lead changes in the final quarter the Warriors took the lead for good with 1:21 to play on a pair of free throws by Miles Ludwigs. Ludwigs finished with 18 points off the bench for S-B-L while Emily Pick led Le Mars with 13 points. The Lady Bulldogs fall to 3-and-8 for the season. Le Mars did win both JV games Monday, 33-27 in the girls game as Emily Ahlers had ten points and 67-43 in the boys game behind Caleb Cline’s 28 points. Le Mars returns to action Friday at Storm Lake in a Lakes Conference doubleheader that will be featured on KLEM starting at 6:15.

(REMSEN) — The Gehlen boys extended their winning streak to eight and the Gehlen girls avenged a December loss with a doubleheader sweep over Remsen St. Mary’s Tuesday night. The tenth-rated Gehlen Catholic girls outscored St. Mary’s 16-0 in the second quarter and went on to beat the Lady Hawks 45-31. The win avenged one of the Gehlen’s two losses, a 41-37 setback in Le Mars December 18th. The Lady Jays scored 20 unanswered points to take a 19-point lead early in the third quarter. St. Mary’s battled back to within seven with five minutes to play before Gehlen closed the game with an 11-4 run. The win improves Gehlen Catholic to 9-and-2 while Remsen St. Mary’s falls to 5-and-6. Hannah Sitzmann led Gehlen’s scoring attack with 14 with Katelin Langel adding 10. The Jays were 17-of-21 from the foul line which aided their winning cause. Paige Harpenau had nine to pace the Lady Hawks with Miranda Staab adding eight and Alexis Bunkers seven. The Gehlen boys used a 12-0 third quarter run to extinguish any upset thoughts Remsen St. Mary’s may have entertained Tuesday night on the home floor. The surge extended a nine-point advantage into a 21-point lead and Gehlen coasted to their ninth win against two losses. The loss was the eighth in a row for the Hawks and they fall to 3-and-8. Blake Wiltgen had a career-high 27 points for Gehlen while Matt Wesselmann had 18 to lead St. Mary’s. Gehlen starts a four-game home stand Friday against Trinity Christian while St. Mary’s plays at cross-town rival Remsen-Union.

(STORM LAKE) — The Le Mars basketball teams had a very successful road trip Friday night if not a very memorable one! The night featured a clean sweep by the Bulldogs’ J-V and varsity teams but the night of basketball was interrupted just before halftime of the boys game when the fire alarms sounded, forcing a full evacuation of the building while school officials and the Storm Lake fire department investigated. It was determined that a faulty heat sensor had set the alarms off and fans were allowed back in the gym and play was resumed about 20 minutes later. The Le Mars boys broke the game open after halftime, winning their fourth straight, 67-45 over the Tornadoes. The win was the 13th in a row in the series for Le Mars, dating back to 2006. Brenden Collins came off the Bulldogs’ bench to ignite a 12-0 run in the first quarter, scoring five of his game-high 17 points during that stretch to put Le Mars in front to stay. The Dogs led 30-18 at the halftime break but by the end of the third quarter had built the advantage to 25 at 47-22. Gabe Rahn had nine for Le Mars and Jake Irwin and Kyle Dolph added eight each. Nic Seaman had 16 for the Tornadoes. The win lifts the Bulldogs to 8-and-3 for the season and 6-and-1 in the Lakes Conference. The Le Mars girls spotted winless Storm Lake a 10-4 lead two minutes into the game before a 36-12 run to halftime had the Lady Bulldogs comfortably in front 40-22 by intermission. Le Mars went onto post a 74-40 win, dropping the Tornadoes to 0-and-12 and extended their losing streak over the last three seasons to 55 straight. The win improves Le Mars to 4-and-8 and 4-and-3 in the Lakes Conference. Emily Pick scored a career-high 22 points for Le Mars, connecting on a career-best six three-pointers. Carolyn Ahlers added ten points. Emily Johnson had 14 for Storm Lake and Megan Miller scored ten. Le Mars won the J-V girls game 42-10 with Holly Schneider scoring 13 points and Emily Ahlers added 10. The J-V boys won 54-29 as Caleb Cline scored 14 and Tyler Paulson 13 for Le Mars. Le Mars hosts Spirit Lake Tuesday night at their new gym to start a two-game home stand next week. Emmetsburg visits Le Mars next Friday.
(LE MARS) — The Gehlen guys and gals swept their twinbill with Trinity Christian Friday night at the Reardon Family gym. The girls won 70-20 while the boys extended their winning streak to nine with a 63-47 victory over the Tigers. Gehlen and Trinity Christian had played to four overtimes back in November in their first boys meeting of the season. Alison Schnepf and Emily Holtgrewe keyed the Lady Jays’ win with 14 points each while Katelin Langel added another 12. Gehlen led 35-13 by halftime and held the Lady Tigers to seven second half points enroute to a 50-point victory. The Gehlen boys used a 10-0 run in the third quarter to get the upper hand in their game, extending a 26-20 lead into a 36-20 advantage three minutes into the second half. Michael Whitehead had 18 points to lead the Jays with sophomore Alex Kellen adding another 14 and Blake Wiltgen 12. Greg Gritters had 22 for Trinity to lead all scorers. Both Gehlen teams improve to 10-and-2 for the season. The Jays continue their four-game home stand with a game against Hinton at the Reardon Family gym Tuesday.

Sioux City North overtook defending champion Sergeant Bluff-Luton late in the final round to win the Le Mars Invitational with 260 points. S-B-L finished with 251. Sheldon/South O’Brien was third with 169 and Le Mars took fourth with 157. Waterloo West was fifth with 150.5, South Sioux City was sixth, Cherokee seventh, Sioux City West eighth and Hinton ninth. Sioux City North and Waterloo West had four champions each.
LE MARS’ PLACE FINISHERS: Tevita Moa-Lamp finished second for Le Mars at 285 pounds with Nic Madsen (106#), Tyler Carlson (120#), Skyler Gries (138#) and Juan Hernandez (152#) all finishing third. Tanner Franksen-Small (113#), Chris Hamann (152#), Chris Hiserote (195#) and Alex Hermes (220#) finished fourth. Kyle Williams and Mitch Timp were sixth.
