Early Morning Fire Destroys Merrill Business
(Merrill) — Fire crews from Merrill, Hinton, and Le Mars responded to an early morning structure fire that started at about 4:00 a.m. at the Alberts Trucking Firm located at 23517 Highway 75, just on the south side of Merrill. Merrill Assistant Fire Chief Chris Fischer describes the scene upon arrival.

The Merrill Fire official says since the building is located just beyond the city limits, available water supplies became an issue. He says crews had to transport water to the scene since a hydrant was not close enough to use. He says the fire fighters also battled the cold temperatures with their equipment. Fire officials are investigating the origin of the fire.

There were no injuries associated with the fire. A driver passing by on Highway 75 reported the fire. Fischer didn’t have an estimate of damage other than to say it probably will run in the thousands of dollars. Fire officials were on the scene for nearly four hours.
Hinton Fire Department Busy With Accidents
(Hinton) — The Hinton Fire Department had a busy Saturday afternoon. They first responded to a four-vehicle accident on Highway 75 and County Road C-80 at about 4:10 p.m. The accident was a result of the dusting of snow that occurred. Little is known about the accident at this time, including whether there were any injuries. The Iowa State Patrol is investigating that accident. Shortly after returning to quarters from the first accident, the Hinton Fire and Rescue Department was called again to respond to a second vehicle accident that happened at about 6:18 p.m. This time it was a one vehicle accident that happened near the intersection of Wren Avenue and Highway 75.
Remsen Ambulance and Fire and Ervin Ahlers Honored At Remsen Chamber Banquet
(Remsen) — Members of the Remsen Ambulance and the Remsen Fire Department were honored Saturday evening during the Remsen annual Chamber of Commerce banquet. The Fire and Ambulance crews were given the “Business of the Year” award. Ervin Ahlers was recognized as the Remsen “Citizen of the Year” for his work in securing a memorial devoted to falled veterans of Remsen.
