(Le Mars) — On July 19th, 1989 Bill Rosacker wasn’t on call when the request came in for help, he broke protocol and went to help anyway. Flight 232 headed from Denver, Colorado to Chicago crash landed in Sioux City that day. Rosacker is now the Emergency Medical Services Director in Le Mars, but had been an EMT for just four years when it happened. He said when he went out for the call, he didn’t realize how big of a crash it was.

Of the 296, an astonishing 185 survived. Rosacker, and 3 others from Le Mars responded with vehicles, but by the time they
got there, much of the choas had calmed. Le Mars EMT’s treated and transported two critical patients and one walking
wounded, the critical patients were members of the flight crew.
He says those who were injured were taken care of within an hour and a half after the crash, so by the time they arrived,
there wasn’t many people left to transport.
Later that day he went back to the tarmack to see if anymore help was needed. He explains what he saw.

Rosacker said he just sat and wondered how anyone could have survived.
