Expect Hot Temperatures And High Humidity Levels Today
OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Some of the most intense heat of the summer so far is expected in Nebraska and Iowa, so forecasters are urging people to take precautions.
The National Weather Service has issued heat advisories for the eastern half of Nebraska and for 74 of Iowa’s 99 counties on Monday and Tuesday.
Temperatures are expected to climb into the 90s across the region and humidity will be high, so heat stroke, heat exhaustion and sunburn are possible.
Leslie Schaffer with the Iowa chapter of the American Red Cross says it’s important to take precautions in the heat, especially for the elderly and young children.
Staying inside during the hottest part of the day can be a big help. People who must work outside should take frequent breaks and drink plenty of fluids.
Preparations For The Plymouth County Fair Have Started
(Le Mars) — Preparations are being made for the 2014 edition of the Plymouth County Fair, which is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Exhibitors are moving displays into place. 4-H and FFA members can purchase tickets at reduced prices at the fair office. Livestock stall assignments will be posted in the barns. 4-H and FFA members will bring their static exhibits to the fair at the 4-H building. Later this evening, beginning at 7:00 p.m. will be the 4-H and FFA Horse Show timed events at the Horse arena.
Fire Department Responds To Carbon Monoxide Alarm
(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Fire and Rescue Department was called Sunday evening for a carbon monoxide alarm. The Fire Department went to 1224 3rd Street Southeast at about 8:30 p.m. Fire officials discovered there was no danger of a build up of carbon monoxide within the residence, and determined the carbon monoxide detector was faulty.
Flight 232 Remembered 25 Years Later
(Sioux City) — Over the weekend, people from across the nation, gathered in Sioux City to remember the events from 25 years ago when United Flight 232 crashed landed at the Sioux City Gateway Airport. Survivors and those who assisted with the ill-fated plane crash were in attendance. Le Mars native, Reverend Greg Clapper led the Saturday reflection service.
Sunday morning, a remembrance service was held at the Anderson Dance Pavillion and Flight 232 Memorial on the city’s riverfront. Saturday, a gathering was held at the Mid America Museum of Aviation and Transportation to Honor the 112 lives lost in the 1989, and to dedicate a garden of reflection. Captain Al Haynes, the pilot of the DC-10 airliner, where 184 survived the crash, was greeted with a standing ovation by a crowd of several hundred who attended the ceremony.:

Jerry Schemmel was one of the survivors of the crash. He has had a successful sportscasting career with Denver sports teams, but noted that everyone has a different way of coping with the event aftermath. Schemmel says while many did move forward, others were not able to.

Schmmel says we will never forget those who died in the plane crash, and he keeps a list of them with him in his dayplanner. The names of the 112 people who perished in the crash were read by at the ceremony by the presidents of Briar Cliff University and Morningside College.
Supreme Court Allows Argosy Casino To Remain Open For A Few More Days
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – The Iowa Supreme Court has potentially given the Argosy riverboat casino in Sioux City more time to stay open.
The high court on Friday granted an emergency stay of a district court order requiring the casino to close July 22. Groups in support of the closure have until Monday to file a resistance.
The stay will be in effect while the state Supreme Court considers whether to hear Argosy’s appeal of the district court’s order to close. It’s unclear how much more time the stay gives the casino.
Karen Bailey, a spokeswoman for Argosy parent Penn National Gaming Co., says she’s pleased.
In April, the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission ordered the riverboat casino to close because it doesn’t meet state gaming license requirements.
Girls Juvenile Home Still Being Discussed
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Some officials are concerned the Iowa Juvenile Home’s closing has created an unequal system where girls don’t have the same options.
Iowa lacks a proper facility for delinquent girls who committed crimes.
The juvenile home closed in January after questions were raised about the treatment of teenagers, including use of isolation cells and a lack of educational opportunities.
Since January, 33 girls might have been candidates for the juvenile home. Three were sent out of state and three were moved to adult court. The others were generally sent to private facilities.
State Court Administrator David Boyd says Iowa usually has no more than 20 delinquent girls that need housing at once. Policymakers will have to decide the best way to provide services.
Woman’s Body Found After Drowning In River
TROY MILLS, Iowa (AP) – Authorities have identified the 29-year-old woman who drowned while tubing down an eastern Iowa river over the weekend.
The Linn County Sheriff’s office says Andrea Zimmermann of Cedar Rapids died Saturday on the Wapsipinicon (WAHP’-si-pen-eh-can) River.
Rescuers were called to the river after four people riding tubes went over the dam in Troy Mills.
Authorities say Zimmerman couldn’t immediately be found after the tubes went over the dam in the swift current.
A small crowd of people gathered on the bridge above the dam to watch the search.
Rescuers recovered Zimmerman’s body from the river.
Car Chase Goes Against Oncoming Traffic
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A police chase through oncoming traffic in central Iowa has ended with no major injuries.
A Polk County Sheriff’s office spokeswoman says the driver was apprehended in the northwest part of the county Sunday evening.
She says a motorist called 911 to report a Pontiac Grand Prix speeding and swerving from shoulder to shoulder on the highway. She says the driver reached speeds up to 80 mph and weaved into oncoming traffic in a construction zone.
The chase ended when police sandwiched the vehicle between their cars. The spokeswoman says the driver refused to exit the vehicle and was uncooperative.
Medics were called to the scene and the driver was taken to an area hospital with minor injuries. She says no charges have been filed.
Cedar Rapids Shootings Leave One Injured
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) – Police say one person is hospitalized and four are in custody following two separate shootings in Cedar Rapids.
The first shooting was reported just before 5 p.m. Sunday and led to Cedar Rapids police taking four people into custody. Police have not charged the people taken in or released their names.
The second shooting happened around 7:30 p.m. Police found one man shot in the leg. The man was taken to a hospital and police have not released his name. His condition is unknown.
Police say both shootings are under investigation and they don’t believe they’re related.
