Congratulations to the Akron-Westfield Girls 2014 State Champion Softball Team.
(FORT DODGE) — Top-rated Akron-Westfield exploded for 12 runs and 16 hits in the 1A State championship game in Fort Dodge Friday morning and the Westerners laid claim to their sixth State title with a 12-1 rout of unrated Kee High. The Kee Hawks led 1-0 after three innings after the Westerners continued to lack the big two-out hit, stranding runners at second and third in both the second and third innings. But the bats got going over the final four innings. A-W took a 4-1 lead in the fourth on RBI doubles by Jordan Hansen and Kortney Hedlund and a critical two-run error on a dropped fly in right field. Hansen added another RBI hit in the fifth to extend the lead to 5-1. Kortney Hedlund, Desi Oltmann and Bailey Davis drove in runs in the sixth and RBI hits by Katie Johnson and again by Kortney Hedlund plus another outfield error brought in four more in the seventh. Katie Johnson finished with four hits and Kortney Hedlund had three hits and three RBI’s. Four other girls had two hits each. Kayla Tindall threw a four-hitter for the Westerners with no walks and six strike outs and was named captain of the all-tournament team for the second year in a row. Katie Johnson, Kortney Hedlund and Bailey Davis joined Tindall on the all-tournament squad. The Westerners extended a state-best winning streak to 54 straight and finish the season at 38-and-0.
