STATE TOURNAMENT at Principal Park in Des Moines

(DES MOINES)  — No. 3 Beckman Catholic bunched four runs and five of their eight hits into the second inning to erase a 1-0 deficit and the Trailblazers went on to beat the Hinton Blackhawks 6-3 Monday night at Principal Park in Des Moines in the 2A State baseball tournament.  Hinton took a first inning lead on Jay Small’s RBI single to center.  But Beckman Catholic tied the game in the second on a single by Ben Loeffelholz and a two-run double by Tony Anstotter put the Trailblazers in front 3-1.  Anstotter had prevented Hinton from padding their early lead with a diving catch in left field to end the top of the second, stranding two Blackhawk base runners.  Conner Klostermann’s RBI double completed Beckman’s four-run second.  Hinton cut the deficit to 4-2 with a RBI ground out by Logan Jurgensmeier in the fifth and threatened to tie the game in the sixth when the Blackhawks loaded the bases with one out.  A double play grounder ended the threat.  The double play was ruled complete when Cole Siders was called for base runner interference at second base in his attempt to break up the double play.  It took a run off the board and ended the inning.  Certainly the turning point of the game!  Beckman added two more runs in their half of the sixth on a RBI triple by Conner Klostermann followed by a dropped fly in the outfield.  Hinton tallied once in the seventh on a error but the game ended with runners on first and second base.  Freshman Collin Jurgensmeier gave the Blackhawks a chance with four solid innings of relief after starter Logan Jurgensmeier gave up six hits and four runs in the first two innings.  Collin gave up two hits and just one earned runs in his relief stint.  Hinton finishes the season at 23-and-9.

STATE TOURNAMENT at Principal Park in Des Moines

(DES MOINES)  — Top-rated Twin Cedars took advantage of five walks, a pair of errors and two hits to score six runs in the first inning and the Sabers went on to beat No. 5 Gehlen Catholic 11-0 Thursday in the Class 1A State baseball tournament semifinals at Principal Park.  It just wasn’t the Jays day!  Senior lefty Blake Wiltgen, who was so dominant in his quarterfinal win last Saturday over Lone Tree, walked four of the first five batters in the game before giving up a two-run single to Brent Parker.  After Wiltgen issued his fifth walk of the inning to the next batter, his day was finished.  Reliever Brady Heying was greeted with another RBI single by Collin Still before he finally recorded the final two outs to end a ten-batter first inning nightmare.  Parker added a sacrifice fly for Twin Cedars in the second inning for a 7-0 lead.  The Sabers sent Gehlen to the tournament sidelines with a four-run fourth inning.  A run scored on Gehlen’s third error of the game before Parker capped a six-RBI day with a three-run double to the center field fence.  Coy Moore finished a two-hit shutout in the top of the fifth for the Sabers, recording the final three outs thanks to Twin Cedar’s second double play of the game.  Moore struck out Kelly Full, his sixth of the afternoon, to end the Jays season at 30-and-4.  Brady Heying’s first inning single to left and Ryan Stoll’s infield single in the third were the only two hits off Moore.  The Jays had only four base runners for the game.  Twin Cedars improves to 35-and-0 and will play No. 2 Newman Catholic for the 1A State title at noon on Saturday.
