Remsen Octoberfest Scheduled For Saturday
(Remsen) — The 41st annual Octoberfest is scheduled for Saturday at the St. Mary’s High School in Remsen. Festival coordinator Mike Matgen says the annual celebration is to acknowledge the German and Luxumborg heritage that settled at Remsen.

Matgen says it takes more than 300 volunteers to coordinate the annual fall festival. The Baviarian Feast is the highlight of the Octoberfest celebration and Matgen explains about the meal to be served.

Prior to the serving of the Bavarian dinner, the crowning of the Octoberfest queen and little prince and princess will take place at the St. Mary’s gymnasium, beginning at 1:30 p.m.

The Alpensterne band will perform between 3:00 and 5:00 and again between 6:00 and 9:00 p.m. There is also a beer garden that begins at 1:00 p.m. Tickets for the dinner go on sale starting at 11:00 a.m. and the cost is $12 for adults and $6 for students 10 and younger.
Chamber Of Commerce To Host Halloween Trick And Treat Event
(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Chamber of Commerce Mainstreet organization will be hosting its annual Halloween Trick or Treat event on Saturday morning. Becky Klohs, event coordinator offers the details.

Klohs says in previous years, more than 400 children have participated in the trick or treat distribution of candy. She anticipates this year’s event will have similar participation levels. Klohs encourages all children to arrive in costume.

Tripp Resigns From Woodbury County Supervisors And Begins 30 Jail Sentence
(Sioux City) — David Tripp has resigned from the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors and has begun serving a 30 day jail sentence. Tripp says he verbally gave county board chairman, George Boykin his resignation Friday morning. Tripp will serve his 30 day sentence in the Monona County jail. He checked into the facility Friday morning. Tripp says he will serve the entire 30 day sentence as there will be no time reduction for good behavior. Tripp, who is also a former Woodbury County jailer, was sentenced to 30 days in jail for aggravated domestic assault which is an aggravated misdemeanor charge. The charge stemmed from an incident last December, where Tripp was arrested after firing a gun in his home during an argument with his wife. Tripp says he intends to move on with his life after serving the 30 days.
Storm Lake Man Convicted For Making Fake Credit Cards
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) – A northwest Iowa man has been convicted of making and using counterfeit credit cards.
Federal prosecutors say Yoirland Rojas, of Storm Lake, was found guilty on Thursday after a three-day trial in Sioux City. He was convicted of two counts of using a counterfeit access device; one count of possessing 15 or more counterfeit access devices; one count of money laundering; and two counts of aggravated identity theft.
Prosecutors say Rojas manufactured credit cards and used them to buy gift cards that he would later use to buy various items. At least two of the card numbers he used belonged to people who reported unauthorized use of their credit cards.
Supreme Court Says No To Video Witness For Court
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Iowa Supreme Court justices say they are not yet ready to allow witnesses to testify through videoconferencing instead of in-person unless it can be shown to be necessary to further in important public interest.
In a court ruling Friday justices say virtual electronic presence in the courtroom may someday become an adequate constitutional substitute for actual physical presence, “but we are not there yet.”
They conclude the constitutional Sixth Amendment right to confront one’s accuser still means facing them live in court in most cases.
The justices’ ruling came in the case of Zachariah Rogerson, a man from Dubuque County charged with causing serious injury by driving while intoxicated.
Prosecutors wanted to allow out-of-state victims and three state-employed lab analysts to testify via a two-way videoconference.
State Employees To Be Reimbursed For Meal Expenses
IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) – Gov. Terry Branstad’s administration says 3,200 union workers are expected to be reimbursed for years of meal expenses that were improperly cut.
After lengthy negotiations with the state’s largest union, the Department of Administrative Services agreed last week to refund meal reimbursements that were cut in August 2011.
A department spokesman tells The Associated Press that the deal with the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees is expected to cost nearly $1.5 million. The state has already reimbursed members of two other unions nearly $250,000 under prior settlements.
AFSCME Council 61 President Danny Homan said Friday that checks might go out in February after the reimbursements are calculated.
Homan says employees who traveled every day – such as motor vehicle enforcement officers – might receive $2,500 or more.
