Remsen Man Shot During Hunting Accident
(Remsen) — A Remsen man was seriously injured Saturday while pheasant hunting in Plymouth County.
Ross A. Arens, 18, of Remsen, was airlifted to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City after receiving a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Arens was crossing a creek and was handing his shotgun to another member of his hunting party when the gun discharged at approximately 8:45 a.m. Saturday.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources is still investigating the incident. The Plymouth County Sheriff’s Department assisted at the scene of the incident. It is thought the incident was accidental and it took place in a field near 230th street and Highway 140, south of Remsen.
Pennslyvania Man Arrested For Cocaine Possession
(Le Mars) — A Pennsylvania man was arrested early Saturday morning by the Le Mars Police Department for the possession of cocaine. The subject, identified as 28 year old Zachary Bujak of Butler, Pennslyvania was originally stopped for expired plates. However, the driver of the vehicle was found to be intoxicated and in possession of cocaine. He was charged with OWI for a second offense, an aggravated misdemeanor and possession of a controlled substance, a serious misdemeanor. He was transported to the Plymouth County jail.
Couple Arrested For Marijuana And Methamphetamine Possession
(Le Mars) — Le Mars Police also made an arrest late Thursday evening involving two people who were stopped for eratic driving, but was found to be in possession of marijuana. The incident happened in the 800 block of 12 Street Southwest. Sobriety tests were conducted and found that 40 year old Terrell Rose of Sioux City was under the influence of a drug other than alcohol. He was taken to the Plymouth County jail and charged with possession of a controlled substance. 46 year old Gina Landwier of Pleasant Hill, Iowa was a passenger in the car, and was found to be in possession of both marijuana and methamphetamine. She was also taken to the Plymouth County jail and charged with drug offenses.
Sunday Roll Over Accident Near Remsen
(Remsen) — The Remsen and Oyens Fire Departments responded to vehicle accident on Sunday morning at about 9:40 a.m. That accident happened on a gravel road near 13054 county road L-12. We are still waiting for a final accident report, but apparently the vehicle rolled and caught on fire. The fire departments were on the scene for approximately an hour and a half.
Le Mars Fire Department Resond To Patio Furniture Fire
(Le Mars) — The Le Mars Fire and Rescue Department responded to a fire Sunday morning at 810 6th Avenue southwest. The fire was reported at 11:05 a.m. When fire fighters arrived on the scene they noticed some backyard patio furniture had caught on fire, when apparently the patio furniture had been too close to a fire pit. Winds kicked up the ashes from the fire pit that was still smoldering from the previous night and scattered those ashes on the patio furniture, causing it to ignite. Fire fighters were on the scene for about 15 minutes.
Wayne Schipper Honored By Iowa Association Of Fire Chiefs
(Le Mars) — Retired Le Mars Fire Chief, Wayne Schipper was honored Saturday evening by the Iowa Association of Fire Chiefs during their annual convention and banquet held in Le Mars. The elder Schipper had served on the board of directors, as well as president of the state fire chiefs association, for more than 25 years. Wayne Schipper was presented a glass plauque acknowledging his long career as the Le Mars Fire Chief, as well as his service and dedication to the Iowa Association of Fire Chiefs. Schipper’s term of office on the board of directors for the Fire Chiefs Association expired this year.
New Clean Water Rules Take Effect
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – A new Iowa clean water rule designed to increase inspections of livestock farms and provide stricter enforcement over manure spills is now in effect after a year of hearings and deliberations by government agencies.
The rule, which took effect Wednesday, establishes new inspection and permit procedures. It does not impose mandatory permits for farms that repeatedly spill manure, a measure some environmental groups including Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement want.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources signed a deal with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency last year to develop the new rule after the EPA threatened to take over federal Clean Water Act enforcement if state officials didn’t do more.
The federal agency says the rule meets its requirements, but Iowa CCI says it’s still too weak.
Herbert Hoover Remembered 50 Years After Funeral
WEST BRANCH, Iowa (AP) – Fifty years ago the funeral for former President Herbert Hoover attracted more than 75,000 people to his hometown of West Branch, Iowa.
A ceremony was held Saturday on the 50th anniversary of the funeral to remember that day and honor Hoover.
Kenneth Quinn, president of the World Food Prize, says Hoover’s death in the fall of 1964 helped bring Americans together during the presidential race between Lyndon Johnson and Barry Goldwater.
Quinn says he remembers Hoover as a humanitarian who fought world hunger.
At Saturday’s ceremony, Quaker minister Ruthie Tippen read the eulogy that Hoover family friend Elton Trueblood delivered at the funeral.
Special Olympics Participant Gets New Bicycle
MASON CITY, Iowa (AP) – Two days after an Iowa fast-food worker’s bicycle was stolen from outside the Culver’s restaurant where he worked someone surprised him with a new one.
The Mason City Globe Gazette reports Nathan King came out of the Mason City restaurant Saturday and found a new silver Schwinn hybrid bike waiting for him.
King says the gift made him feel special, and he wishes he could thank the anonymous person who gave him the new bike.
King has worked at Culver’s for 10 years, and he relied on his old bike for transportation all those years. It disappeared during his shift on Thursday.
King has completed several marathons and he’s a member of the North Iowa All Stars Special Olympics basketball team.
Postal Worker Charged With Stealing
FOREST CITY, Iowa (AP) – A northern Iowa postmaster has been accused of stealing prescription pain medications from the mail.
Mason City television station KIMT reports (https://bit.ly/1oODWbk ) that Danny Miller has been indicted and is scheduled to be in U.S. District Court in Sioux City on Wednesday. Miller’s attorney didn’t immediately return a call Monday from The Associated Press.
Court document say Miller is charged with theft of mail by a postal service employee. He was appointed Forest City postmaster in 2012.
