Sergeant Bluff Man Dies From Tractor Accident
(Sergeant Bluff) — A 76 year old Sergeant Bluff man died on Saturday as a result of a tractor rolling over. The Woodbury County Sheriff’s Office, Sergeant Bluff Fire and Ambulance Department, and Woodbury County Emergency Services were dispatched to the 1900 block of Glenn Ellen Road at about 4:45 p.m. Initial investigation at the scene shows the man, who has not yet been identified, was operating the tractor, clearing tree limbs and yard debris, when the tractor rolled down a small hill. The victim was thrown from the tractor. He was treated at the scene and was transported to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City by the Sergeant Bluff Ambulance where he had died as a result of injuries sustained in the accident.
Feds Will Not Pursue Bank Account Of Arnold’s Park Restaurant
CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) – Federal prosecutors are dropping an effort to seize nearly $33,000 from an Iowa restaurant owner’s bank account.
The IRS became suspicious of Carole Hinders because of a pattern of cash deposits of less than $10,000.
Hinders says the cash came from her Mexican restaurant, Mrs. Lady’s, in Arnold’s Park, Iowa, that doesn’t accept credit cards.
Hinders wasn’t accused of a crime, but federal law makes it illegal to deposit less than $10,000 if it is part of an attempt to circumvent federal reporting requirements.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Matthew Cole said in a motion filed Saturday the case should be dropped to conserve judicial resources.
Cole says evidence showed that Hinders had skirted bank reporting rules, but he decided the case wasn’t worth pursuing now.
Wrestling Coaches Arrested For Attacking A Man
WEBSTER CITY, Iowa (AP) – Two wrestling coaches for a central Iowa high school have been arrested after police say they broke into a home and attacked the owner.
Webster City High School head coach Ted Larson and assistant coach Terry Nessa were being held Monday morning at the Story County Jail. Both men in their 50s are charged with felony assault, first-degree burglary and second-degree criminal mischief.
The county sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a rural home Saturday night. Capt. Barry Thomas says the pair damaged a vehicle outside the residence and attacked the victim, who was taken to a Nevada hospital in an unclear condition.
The victim’s identity hasn’t been released.
Webster City Community School District’s superintendent says Larson has been placed on administrative leave.
Online jail records didn’t indicate attorneys.

Authorities Search Lake For Missing Council Bluffs Man
COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa (AP) – Authorities are searching a western Iowa lake for a man who was reported missing after a canoe capsized, and a second man was being treated at a hospital after swimming to shore.
Council Bluffs Police Sgt. Darren Budd says the canoe the two men were in capsized around 1:45 p.m. Sunday. The men were not immediately identified Sunday.
At the time of the accident, the water temperature was around 35 degrees, but one of the men managed to swim to shore and alert the park ranger.
The swimmer was taken to a Council Bluffs hospital for treatment of hypothermia.
Rescue crews searched the lake until nightfall Sunday without finding the missing man but had to suspend their efforts. Authorities plan to resume the search Monday morning.
Carroll Man Recovering From Being Shot During Hunting Incident
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – An Iowa man is recovering from a shotgun wound after being shot by a fellow hunter who was trying to hit a moving deer.
The Iowa Department of Natural Resources said 47-year-old Eric Winkler was hit in the abdomen Saturday by a shotgun slug fired by someone else in his hunting party.
The Carroll man was helping to drive deer at the time of the shooting. He was taken to an area hospital and later transferred to a Des Moines hospital.
Recreational Safety Officer Jeff Barnes says hunters should make sure they know where everyone in their party is at all times. And hunters shouldn’t fire in the direction of other hunters.
Barnes says most hunting incidents happen when shots are fired at moving deer.
Fire Fighter And City Councilman Save Man From Fire
MAQUOKETA, Iowa (AP) – A fire chief in eastern Iowa says an off-duty firefighter and a city councilman have saved a man in a wheelchair from a burning home.
Maquoketa Fire Chief Mark Beck says the pair rescued Harvey Untiedt on Sunday after a fire started near his Christmas tree. Beck says firefighter Matt Tranel and Councilman Corey Simonson live nearby and went into the house before firefighters arrived.
Beck says smoke in the air reached down to their knees when they entered. The men found Untiedt coughing in the kitchen and helped him outside.
It’s unclear what started the fire.
Education Advocates Ask For Fine Arts To Be A Part Of Iowa Core Curriculum
DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) – Fine arts advocates in Iowa are renewing an effort to get music, drama and art included in state education standards.
The Iowa Alliance for Arts Education will lobby lawmakers again next year to amend the Iowa Core to add the fine arts. Leon Kuehner, the group’s executive director, says a similar attempt failed in 2014, but he and others hope they will have more luck this time.
State law dictates that schools teach the arts, but the fine arts are not listed in the Iowa Core, which was established in schools statewide in 2008 after approval from the Legislature and the governor.
Democrats who control the Iowa Senate have been supportive of this effort, but it is not clear there is interest in the Republican-dominated House.
