MONDAY RESULTS – June 22

(softball)

Gehlen Catholic (13-10/6-1) 4, Remsen St. Mary’s (12-12) 1

(REMSEN)  — Meghen Heying threw a six-hitter and allowed one unearned run to pitch Gehlen Catholic to a 4-1 win over Remsen St. Mary’s in War Eagle Conference softball at Remsen Monday night.  The Hawks stranded eight base runners, all at either second or third.  Taylor Peters and Jaci Alesch each had a triple for the Lady Jays and scored on suicide bunts by Melissa Schmit and Jolee Linden.  Allie Hansen had a RBI single and Alesch brought home a seventh inning run with a ground out.  Catherine Russell had two hits and a RBI for St. Mary’s.  Morgan Cronin took the loss, giving up seven hits and striking out six.  The Lady Jays improve to 13-and-10 and 6-and-1 in the W-E-C while St. Mary’s falls to 12-and-12.  Gehlen Catholic travels to Akron to meet number-two (1A) Akron-Westfield Tuesday in a make-up game.  The game will be broadcast on KLEM.

(#5-2A)Emmetsburg 3, Le Mars (8-12/4-4) 2

(LE MARS) — Number-five (2A) Emmetsburg capitalized on a pair of fifth inning errors to plate two runs, snapping a 1-all tie and the E-Hawks edged Le Mars 3-2 Monday night in Lakes Conference softball at the Bulldog Complex.  The loss halts a four-game winning streak for the Lady Bulldogs and drops their season record to 8-and-12 and evens their league mark at 4-and-4.  Janessa Milbrodt’s RBI double in the sixth inning cut a 3-1 deficit to one run but the Lady Bulldogs were unable to score in the seventh despite a lead-off single by Kassidy Rieken.  Janessa Milbrodt allowed just five hits while walking three and striking out seven for Le Mars.  Hali Noll allowed six hits for the E-Hawks with no walks and four strike outs.  Holly Schneider had a double and single to lead Le Mars offensively and Christina Konz drove in the first Bulldog run with a single in the third.  Le Mars hosts number-seven (3A) Spirit Lake Wednesday.

(baseball)

Gehlen Catholic (14-4/7-1) 8, (#7-1A)Remsen St. Mary’s (17-4/6-2) 4

(REMSEN)  — Gehlen Catholic rallied for seven runs in the top of the seventh inning Monday night to erase a 4-1 deficit and then had to escape a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the bottom of the seventh to beat number-seven (1A) Remsen St. Mary’s 8-4 in Remsen.  Solomon Freking recorded an infield pop out and two strike outs to earn a save and nail down a victory for Gehlen starter Morgan Kellen, who departed after hitting a batter, walking another and then watching as a fly ball into shallow center field fell for hit when the Jays lost it in the lights.  Ty Kurth keyed the seven-run seventh inning with a two-run single with Morgan Kellen and Solomon Freking adding RBI hits and Noah Livermore forced home another run when he was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.  A passed ball brought in the final run.  Colton Clark, who relieved starter Elliott Conover in the seventh, took the loss.  Conover broke-up a scoreless pitcher’s duel with a two-run homer in the fifth.  Solomon Freking had four hits for Gehlen and two RBI’s.  The outcome tightens up the War Eagle baseball race, throwing the league title chase into a four-team battle.  West Sioux is still unbeaten in the league at 8-and-0 with Gehlen second at 7-and-1 and Hinton and Remsen St. Mary’s at 6-and-2.  Gehlen travels to Hinton Wednesday for a non-conference match-up with the Blackhawks with coverage on KLEM starting at 7:30.

Le Mars (11-6/7-2) 15, Emmetsburg 3, five innings

(LE MARS) — The Le Mars Bulldogs pounded out ten hits and scored 15 runs to win 15-3 over Emmetsburg in Lakes Conference baseball Monday night at the Bulldogs Sports Complex.  Keaton Candor belted two home runs and drove in five runs to lead the way offensively.  Dayton Rand also had five RBI’s on a pair of doubles.  Gabe Eckstaine threw a three-hitter with five strike outs to earn the win.  Le Mars improves to 11-and-6 for the season and 7-and-2 in the Lakes Conference.  They’ll host Spirit Lake Wednesday.

TUESDAY RESULTS – June 23

(softball)

(#2-1A)Akron-Westfield (17-1/8-0) 6, Gehlen Catholic (13-11/6-2) 2  (make-up from June 11th)

(AKRON)  — Ann Hedlund checked the Lady Jays to four hits and four walks while striking out ten to send number-two (1A) Akron-Westfield to a 6-2 win over Gehlen Catholic in War Eagle Conference softball action at Akron Tuesday night.  The game was make-up of a June 11th rain out.  The Westerners trailed 1-0 until Desi Oltmanns drilled a two-run single by short to spark a three-run third inning.  Gehlen pulled to with in 3-2 in the fourth when Taylor Peters tripled and circled the bases when the throw to third got away for the Westerner’s lone error of the game.  Peters had three of the four Gehlen hits and scored both runs, finishing a home run shy of hitting for the cycle.  Akron-Westfield, always the opportunist, took advantage of Gehlen’s fourth error to score on Katie Johnson’s sacrifice fly in the fourth and added two more runs in the fifth on three walks, a RBI hit by Danika Tindall and a squeeze bunt by Ryleigh Schnell.  Emily Meyer held the Westerners to just five hits but the errors and walks gave A-W an ample supply of base runners to work their pressure game successfully.  The win was the 14th straight since a May 30th loss to Westwood and improves Akron-Westfield’s record to 17-and-1 with an 8-and-0 league mark.  Gehlen falls to 13-and-11 for the season and 6-and-2 in league play.  The Westerners host Trinity Christian Wednesday while Gehlen travels to Hinton.

WEDNESDAY RESULTS – June 24

(softball)

(#7-3A)Spirit Lake (23-4/9-0) 2, Le Mars (8-13/4-5) 1

(LE MARS)  — Maddie Richter’s two-run double with two outs in the top of the seventh inning rallied number-seven (3A) Spirit Lake to a 2-1 Lakes Conference softball victory over Le Mars Wednesday night to keep the Indians unbeaten in league play and in first place with a 9-and-0 record.  The Indians improve to 23-and-4 for the season.  Much of the night featured a terrific pitcher’s duel between Spirit Lake’s Bailee Newman and Le Mars’ Janessa Milbrodt.  Sidney Baumgartner broke-up the scoreless tie with a fifth inning single to give Le Mars a 1-0 lead.  The Lady Bulldogs were one out away from their biggest win of the season when Mackenzie Thate and Carly Ites started the game winning rally with singles ahead of Richter’s double.  Newman allowed two hits, two walks and struck out six.  Milbrodt scattered eight hits, walked four and also struck out six.  Holly Schneider had the only other hit for the Lady Bulldogs with a single in the first inning.  Le Mars falls to 8-and-13 for the season and 4-and-5 in the Lakes Conference.  The Lady Bulldogs travel to Cherokee Thursday for a make-up game from a June 11th rain out.

Gehlen Catholic (14-11) 15, Hinton (5-15) 7

(HINTON)  — Gehlen Catholic scored eight runs in the fifth inning inning to break open a tight a game and the Lady Jays posted a 15-7 non-conference win at Hinton Wednesday night in summer softball.  Gehlen bunched five of their twelve hits into the big fifth inning uprising to take a 13-2 lead.  Hinton, three outs away from losing by the ten-run rule, scored four runs to extend the game to a full seven innings.  Jill Kessenich and Jolee Linden had three hits each for Gehlen and Jaci Alesch had three RBI’s.  Christina Stuerman had three hits for Hinton and Madison Kovarna drove in three runs.  Gehlen Catholic improves to 14-and-11 for the season while Hinton falls to 5-and-15.  The Lady Jays play a War Eagle Conference game at South O’Brien Friday while Hinton hosts George-Little Rock Thursday.

(baseball)

Le Mars (12-6/8-2) 9, (#9-3A)Spirit Lake 0

(LE MARS)  — Trent Hilbrands threw a four-hit shutout and Dayton Rand drove in three runs on four hits to lead Le Mars to a 9-0 Lakes Conference baseball win over number nine (3A) Spirit Lake Wednesday night at the Bulldog Sports Complex.  Hilbrands walked two and struck out six in a masterful pitching performance.  Rand had a pair of doubles among his four hits to lead a ten-hit attack.  Keaton Candor had a two-run double for the Dogs.  Le Mars broke the game wide open with a six-run fifth inning.  The win avenged a ten-run rule loss at Spirit Lake earlier this month and moves the defending champion Bulldogs into a second place tie with the Indians in the Lakes Conference race.  Le Mars now has league-leading Spencer in their cross-hairs with a game against the Tigers scheduled for Monday in Spencer.  The Bulldogs, now 12-and-6 for the season and 8-and-2 in the conference, plays host to Sioux City North Friday.

(#8-2A)Hinton (15-4) 4, Gehlen Catholic (14-5) 3

(HINTON)  — Skylar Beller dashed home on a wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh inning to give number-eight (2A) Hinton a 4-3, walk-off win over Gehlen Catholic Wednesday night in a non-conference match-up at Diediker Field in Hinton.  The win avenged a walk-off loss to the Jays in Le Mars earlier this month.  The Jays wiped out a 3-0 deficit with one of their pattoned late-game rallies. RBI singles by Ryan Stoll and D.J. Loutsch in the sixth inning closed the Hinton lead to 3-2.  Gehlen tied the game in the top of the seventh on a error and would have taken the lead had it not been for a nifty double play engineered by second baseman Joel Kirwan that ended the inning, preventing the go-ahead run from crossing the plate.  Kirwan handled a bases-loaded grounder by Gehlen’s Morgan Kellen, tagged Noah Livermore and then threw to first base to narrowly get Kellen.  Jarod Steffes had three hits to lead an eight-hit attack for Gehlen Catholic, who falls to 14-and-5 with the loss.  Jay Small had a double and two walks and scored twice for the Blackhawks, who improve to 15-and-4 heading into a home date Thursday against George-Little Rock.  Gehlen travels to Paullina for a War Eagle Conference game with South O’Brien Thursday before hosting the Spalding tournament Friday and Saturday in Granville.

(CHEROKEE)  — Brookelyn Hoeppner drilled a three-run first inning homer and later added another RBI on a bases-loaded walk to lead Cherokee to an 8-3 Lakes Conference softball win over Le Mars Thursday night in a make-up game from a June 11th rain out.  Lindsay Williams allowed eight hits and struck out six to pick up the win in the pitcher’s circle for the Braves.  Holly Schneider and Sidney Baumgartner had two hits each for Le Mars and Kassidy Rieken had a two-run single that gave Le Mars a 2-0 lead in the top of the first.  Grace Milbrodt took the loss, giving up 13 hits, walking one and striking out two for the Lady Bulldogs.  Le Mars falls to 8-and-14 for the season and 4-and-6 in the Lakes Conference.

(baseball)

Gehlen Catholic (15-5/8-1) 9, South O’Brien 2

(PAULLINA)  — Junior Roman Freking had two hits and drove in four runs to lead Gehlen Catholic to a 9-2 War Eagle Conference baseball win over South O’Brien Thursday night at Paullina.  Freking’s two-run single in the first inning got the Jays off to a positive start and his two-run homer in the second keyed a five-run inning as the Jays supplied starting pitcher Lucas Hunt with plenty of early run support.  Hunt allowed three hits and struck out seven in his six innings on the mound with Ryan Stoll working the final inning.  Stoll gave up no hits and struck out one.  The Jays improve to 15-and-5 for the season and 8-and-1 in league play.

Le Mars (9-15) 7, (#1-1A)Akron-Westfield 4

(SPENCER)  — Le Mars erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning Friday afternoon to erase a 4-0 deficit and the Lady Bulldogs stunned top-rated Akron-Westfield 7-4 at the Spencer Tournament.  The loss dropped the Westerners to 20-and-3.  Bailey Davis took a three-hit shutout into the sixth inning for A-W before Le Mars sent ten batters to the plate and collected six hits.  Sidney Baumgartner’s three-run homer was the key blow.  Christina Konz and Grace Milbrodt also had RBI singles in the inning.  Desi Oltmanns had two hits for Akron-Westfield.  Janessa Milbrodt allowed only three hits while striking out six to earn the pitching win for Le Mars while Bailey Davis was tagged for the loss, giving up nine hits while striking out seven.  Akron-Westfield had their 16-game winning streak snapped earlier in the day Friday as number-five (3A) Spirit Lake bettered the Westerners 7-5.

Newell-Fonda beat Le Mars 8-4 in the first game played by the Lady Bulldogs Friday at the Spencer Classic.  The Mustangs pounded out 13 hits against freshman pitcher Grace Milbrodt, scoring six runs in the first two innings.  Hailey Falline had a pair of two-run singles to key the quick start for Newell-Fonda.  Holly Schneider had three hits for the Lady Bulldogs and Jenn Schneider belted a home run.  Le Mars takes a 9-and-15 record into Saturday’s games against Denison-Schleswig and Marcus/Meriden-Cleghorn/Remsen-Union.

Gehlen Catholic (15-11/7-2) 5, South O’Brien 4

(PAULLINA)  — Carly Bunkers keyed a three-run sixth inning rally Friday night at Paullina with a two-run single that lifted Gehlen Catholic to a 5-4 War Eagle Conference softball win over South O’Brien.  The Wolverines led 4-2 going into the sixth before Jill Kessenich drove in a run with a single just ahead of Bunkers clutch hit.  Bunkers finished with three RBI’s for the Lady Jays.  South O’Brien stranded a runner at second base in the bottom of the seventh as Meghen Heying nailed down the victory, completing a six-hitter with five strikeouts.  Olivia Sickelka had a two-run homer in the first inning for South O’Brien.  Gehlen improves to 15-and-11 for the season and 7-and-2 in the W-E-C.  The Lady Jays host Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn Monday in War Eagle Conference play.

There was a frightening moment in the JV game Friday night when Le Mars junior pitcher Dylan Harms was hit in the face with a line drive.  According to Bulldog head coach Trent Eckstaine, Harms suffered a broken nose and some other facial fractures and is suffering from swelling on the brain.  He was transported by air to Omaha were he is being monitored closely this weekend.  Keep him in your prayers!

In the loss to Denison-Schleswig, Le Mars built a 5-1 lead through the first four innings behind Janessa Milbrodt’s RBI single in the third and her three-run double in the fourth.  The Monarchs scored three runs in the fifth to draw to within 5-4 and then took the lead with a four-run sixth inning.  Le Mars tallied one run in the bottom of the seventh and had two runners on when the game ended.  Kalin Hardyk and Grace Milbrodt split the pitching chores with Milbrodt taking the loss.  Janessa Milbrodt finished with three hits, including two doubles, and four RBI’s.

Le Mars (13-9) 7,  Kuemper Catholic 4

(CARROLL)  — Le Mars split their two games at the Kuemper Catholic baseball classic Sunday in Carroll, losing 8-5 to Council Bluffs St. Albert before winning over the host school, Kuemper Catholic 7-4.  St. Albert broke away from a 5-all tie with three runs in their final two at-bats to win 8-5.  The Falcons rapped out 13 hits against Preston Vore and Dayton Rand, getting three each from Jon Meyerring and Tom Sneed.  Keaton Candor had three hits and two RBI’s for Le Mars.  His two-run triple in the first keyed a three-run opening frame that erased a 2-0 deficit.  The Dogs added two more runs in the second to move in front 5-4.  The Falcons tied the game in the third.

In the 7-4 win over Kuemper Catholic, Riley Magnussen pitched effectively for 6 1/3 innings, allowing five hits, six walks and two strike outs.  Magnussen tired in the seventh and needed Gabe Eckstaine to quell a rally by the Knights.  Kuemper scored three runs before Eckstaine earned a save.  Le Mars had eleven hits with Matt Ellefson, Kyle Kliever and Trevor Westhoff collecting two each.  Gabe Eckstaine drove in a pair of runs.  The Bulldogs take a 13-and-9 record to Spencer Monday for a key Lakes Conference match-up with the Tigers.  Spencer leads the league with a 9-and-1 record while Le Mars and Spirit Lake sit a game back at 8-and-2.  Monday’s game will be carried on KLEM at 7:30.
