Joy Hollow Log Cabin To Be Placed On Foundation
(Le Mars) — After a long wait, officials with the Plymouth County Historical Museum, are announcing the Joy Hollow log cabin will be lowered on to its foundation this coming Tuesday morning. The cabin has been sitting on blocks and jacks since it was moved from the Plymouth County fair grounds on June 5th. Judy Bowman, museum administrator, says the process is scheduled to begin at around 9:00 a.m.
Commodity Carnival To Be Featured At Round Barn During Fair
(Le Mars) — People of all ages will have the opportunity to learn about commodity futures trading and risk management, while at the same time having fun. The Le Mars Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee will host the interactive game entitled “Commodity Carnival” during three days of the Plymouth County Fair. “Commodity Carnival” is sponsored by the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the National 4-H Organization.
Paul Jacobson, chairman of the Le Mars Chamber of Commerce Agriculture Committee, says “Plymouth County is fortunate to have this interactive and educational game featured during the fair,” Only 14 county fairs across Iowa have the opportunity to feature this risk management game, and Plymouth County is one of the 14.”
Commodity Carnival will be located on the second level of the famous Round Barn on Friday, July 31st; Saturday, August 1st; and Sunday, August 2nd. It is part of the overall exhibit “A Round the Farm in the Barn”.
Jacobson says, “Pork production plays a major role in Plymouth County agriculture, and the Chamber Ag Committee believes everyone that visits the Plymouth County Fair and tours the famous Round Barn will enjoy participating in the Commodity Carnival,” said Jacobson. “The Commodity Carnival will highlight the importance of futures trading with using lean hog futures as its example. Participants will have the opportunity to win prizes that will have a pork production theme,” said Jacobson.
Participants will be asked to determine how much corn and feed they will need to purchase for their “imaginary hog” to make it to market. A part of the risk factor will be to slide a “chip” on a peg board and see which slot it drops in. Each slot has a different value. “If people enjoy watching the television game show “The Price Is Right” with its “Plinko” board, then they will enjoy participating in our game of “Commodity Carnival,” said Jacobson.
“Commodity Carnival will be available at different times through the three days it will be featured at the Plymouth County Fair inside the Round Barn”, said Jacobson.
Florida Man Arrested For Sloan Stabbing Incident
(Sioux City) — Woodbury County authorities have arrested a Florida man and have charged him for stabbing a Sloan man. The incident occurred on Saturday, July 18th, in the 400 block of Evans Street in Sloan. 28 year old Jonathon Pettis of Ponce de Leon, Florida was arrested in Polk county, Nebraska. Pettis waived his extradition back to Woodbury County. He has been placed in custody at the Woodbury County jail.
Sergeant Bluff Hosts Synthetic Drug Seminar
(Sergeant Bluff) — A Georgia man whose son died after using synthetic marijuana was the keynote speaker Thursday at a conference on synthetic drugs in Sergeant Bluff. Lynn Dyer’s 14-year-old son Dakota took his own life three years ago.

Dyer’s wife is a health care professional and he says they had no idea that K-2, Spice and other such synthetic drugs existed, or that their son knew about them.

. The Bremen, Georgia resident established a foundation in his son’s name and travels the country speaking about the dangers of synthetic drugs. He has three goals.

Turkey Operations Start Re-populating Barns
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) – Midwest poultry producers are growing turkeys again.
Minnesota lost 9 million turkeys and chickens to bird flu. Now, 37 of its farms have been cleared to restock.
Among the first is do so is Greg Langmo of Litchfield. He says it feels good to be getting back to normal.
Iowa lost 34 million birds, mostly egg-laying chickens. Brad Moline of Manson is Iowa’s first farmer cleared to restock and will begin doing so next Friday.
He says he hasn’t been this excited about restocking turkeys since he got his first flock when he was a kid.
An update from the USDA on Friday says researchers still haven’t nailed down exactly how the virus spreads.
Trump Campaign Prevents Register From Covering Event
WASHINGTON (AP) – The Des Moines Register says Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has denied press credentials to its reporters after the newspaper published an editorial calling on the billionaire businessman to end his campaign. The Register says its reporters were denied credentials to a Trump campaign event in Oskaloosa, Iowa, on Saturday. The newspaper says Trump campaign manager Corey Lewandowski told its reporters they were being excluded because of Tuesday’s editorial.
Army Corps Of Engineers Close Two Saylorville Beaches
SAYLORVILLE LAKE, Iowa (AP) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has closed two beaches at Saylorville Lake near Des Moines.
The corps announced Friday it has closed Sandpiper and Oak Grove beaches because of a blue-green algae bloom.
The decision to close the beaches followed routine water quality testing that found high levels of microcystin, which is produce by blue-green algae and can be dangerous to humans and animals. The compound can cause rashes, stomach pain and even liver damage in people and can be deadly for pets.
The Iowa Department of Public Health says blue green algae often forms in warm, calm water that has high levels of fertilizer runoff or other nutrients.
Saylorville Lake is about 10 miles north of Des Moines.
Iowa Falls Man In Jail After Threatening Judges
IOWA FALLS, Iowa (AP) – An Iowa Falls man is in jail after his arrest on a charge of threatening to cut the throats of judges during a call to an office of the U.S. Department of Justice in Washington.
The Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier reports 35-year-old Andre Michael Lafontaine the Third appeared in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids on Friday on the threat charge. He’s in jail pending a detention hearing set for Tuesday.
Prosecutors allege Lafontaine left a threatening message laced with obscenities and a racial epithet on Monday. He complained the FBI hasn’t responded to his allegations of official corruption.
Lafontaine sued Iowa Falls in 2012 claiming he was abused by police officers in 2010. A judge dismissed the lawsuit in 2013.
Lafontaine’s public defender did not immediately return a message.
