Alec Langel led the Jays with 18 points while Carson Kneip and Roman Freking added 14 each. Travis Weiler led the Rockets with 7. Gehlen will play their fourth game in five days Tuesday night when the Jays travel to Akron-Westfield to begin War Eagle Conference play with a girl/boy doubleheader. Gehlen is now 1-and-2 for the season.

HULL — No. 3 (2A) Western Christian broke away from a 54-51 lead with four minutes to play to beat the No. 13 (4A) Le Mars Lady Bulldogs 66-53 Tuesday night in the Lakes Conference opener for both schools. Payton Harmsen dropped in seven of the ten three-pointers for the Wolfpack to lead all scorers with 23 points. Ashtyn VeerBeek had 14, Erica Bousema 12 and Kaira Moss 10 for Western. Freshman Madison Dreckman had 20 points for Le Mars with Jen Schneider adding another 14 and Sidney Baumgartner 11. The Lady Bulldogs drop to 1-and-2 for the season. The Western Christian boys opened the 2015-2016 season with a 60-44 victory over Le Mars in Hull Tuesday night. Le Mars had a 17-14 lead after the first quarter but Western Christian closed the first half on a 12-4 run to grab a 32-25 lead. A 17-8 third quarter advantage put the Wolfpack in control as they built a 20-point fourth quarter lead before settling on a 16-point victory. 6’6″ Josh VanLingen led Western’s balanced scoring attack with 16 points, with Taylor Miedema adding 13, Ben Gesink 11 and Tyson Kooima 10. Trent Hilbrands finished with 20 points for Le Mars, but only six after halftime. Jake Thompson added 12 for the Bulldogs. Le Mars falls to 1-and-1 heading into a Friday girl/boy doubleheader at Spencer.
AKRON — Ann Hedlund led Akron-Westfield (2-1) to a 48-28 War Eagle Conference win over Gehlen Catholic Tuesday night, netting 15 points for the Westerners. Jolee Linden and Jaci Alesch had 10 each for Gehlen Catholic, who falls to 0-and-4. The Gehlen Catholic boys earned their second win in as many nights with a 62-50 victory at Akron-Westfield Tuesday. Cole Wiltgen had 14 points to lead the Jays with Roman Freking and Carson Kneip adding 12 each. Wyatt Heyl led all scorers with 17 for A-W. Gehlen is now 2-and-2 for the season and 1-and-0 in the W-E-C while Akron-Westfield falls to 1-and-1 for the season and 0-and-1 in the conference. Gehlen hosts Remsen St. Mary’s Friday night while Akron-Westfield travels to South O’Brien.

AMES – Monte Morris hit a runner with nine seconds left and fourth-ranked Iowa State rallied from a 20-point deficit to stun Iowa 83-82 on Thursday night. Morris and Jameel McKay each had 20 points for the Cyclones (8-0), who scored the game’s final nine points to remain unbeaten.
A 30-11 run brought Iowa State within 82-81 with 21 seconds left. Morris then drove the lane and floated in the go-ahead shot, which the Cyclones made stand with one final defensive stop. Jarrod Uthoff scored 30 of his 32 points in the first half for Iowa (7-3), which has lost seven straight in Ames.

ATLANTA – Iowa’s Desmond King has won the Jim Thorpe Award for the nation’s best defensive back. The award was presented Thursday night. King, a junior cornerback, led Iowa with eight interceptions, including one he returned for a touchdown, this season. He is the first Hawkeyes player to win the honor.
ORANGE CITY — Matt McCarty was named Northwestern College’s new head football coach less than 24 hours after Kyle Achterhoff abruptly resigned the position after seven seasons Wednesday. McCarty, 35, has been an assistant with the Red Raiders for the past eleven seasons following the end of his Red Raider playing career. He served as the defensive coordinator this fall. McCarty is only the fifth coach since Northwestern became a four-year institution in 1960.

GLENDALE, Ariz. – The Arizona Cardinals beat the Minnesota Vikings 23-20 last night to wrap up an NFC playoff berth. Carson Palmer threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns, and Chandler Catanzaro put the Cardinals ahead to stay with a 47-yard field goal with 1:23 remaining. The Vikes had a chance to kick a tying field goal until Dwight Freeney stripped quarterback Teddy Bridgewater of the ball, allowing Calais Campbell to recover it with five seconds left.

SPENCER — Riley Maschino and Preston Funderburg hit back-to-back three-pointers in the second overtime Friday night to secure a 95-84 victory for Spencer over Le Mars in an emotionally charged Lakes Conference match-up in Spencer. The two teams battled to a 69-all tie at the end of regulation and Jake Thompson’s tip-in at the buzzer sent the game into a second overtime tied at 80. The second overtime though belonged to the Tigers with Funderburg and Maschino scoring five points each as Spencer outscored the Bulldogs 15-4. Le Mars junior Trent Hilbrands led all scorers with 42 points, 19 coming the fourth quarter to lead the Dogs to a 64-60 lead in the final four minutes of regulation. Jake Kluender had 41 for Spencer with Funderburg adding 29. Will Pottebaum dropped in 17 for the Bulldogs Le Mars falls to 1-and-2 for the season with an 0-2 Lakes Conference start. Spencer remains unbeaten at 4-and-0. In the girls game, No. 15 (4A)Spencer won a 60-49 decision in a hard-fought conference encounter. Sophomore sensation Keeley Petzenhauser led Spencer with 32 points. Freshman Madison Dreckman had 20 to pace Le Mars while Jen Schneider and Katrina Engebretson had 14 and 11 respectively. The Tigers led 38-37 heading into the fourth quarter before outscoring the Lady Bulldogs 22-12 to improve to 4-and-0. Le Mars has dropped three straight, all to rated opponents, leaving the Lady Dogs at 1-and-3 for the season and 0-and-2 in Lakes Conference play. The Le Mars girls travel to Sergeant Bluff-Luton Saturday night for a non-conference jv/varsity doubleheader. Le Mars hosts Cherokee Tuesday in their next Lakes Conference action.
LE MARS — The Gehlen Catholic boys improved to 3-and-2 with their third straight victory Friday night, beating Remsen St. Mary’s 49-43 in a War Eagle Conference game at the Ronald Fox gym in Le Mars. Carson Kneip poured in five three-pointers and finished with a game-high 22 points to lead the Jays. Colin Schroeder had 14 for the Hawks with Nicholas Ruden adding 11. St. Mary’s falls to 3-and-2 with the loss. The Gehlen Catholic girls picked up their first win under new coach Brandon Schaecker, beating Remsen St. Mary’s 53-43 Friday to even their War Eagle Conference record at 1-and-1 and improves their season mark to 1-and-4. Jaci Alesch led a balanced Gehlen scoring attack with 14 points with Jolee Linden adding 12 and Becca Konz dropped in 10. Haley Delperdand had 22 points to lead Remsen St. Mary”s. Gehlen returns to action Tuesday at Trinity Christian in Hull. The doubleheader will be featured on KLEM starting at 5:55.

FARGO, North Dakota — Bruce Anderson returned the second half kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown to erase a 10-7 halftime deficit and North Dakota State rallied past U-N-I 23-13 Saturday in the Fargo Dome to advance to the semifinals of the F-C-S playoffs. The Panthers took a 7-0 lead on a 25-yard scoring pass from Aaron Bailey to Brandon Smith and broke a 7-all tie with a 32-yard field goal by Michael Schmadeke with 7:52 to play in the second quarter. King Frazier extended the Bison lead to 21-10 on a four-yard run with 6:40 to play in the game before U-N-I tallied a 23-yard field goal by Schmadeke at the 4:17 mark. The Bison got a safety with 2:57 to play to complete the scoring. The loss ended a seven-game winning streak for U-N-I as they close out their season at 9-and-4.
