MARCUS — Gehlen Catholic played their best defensive game of the season and used a balanced scoring attack at the offensive end to pull off a 64-50 upset of No. 6 MMCRU in the 1A Regional semifinals in Marcus.   The outcome ends the Royals unbeaten season and MMCRU finishes the season at 21-1.  Gehlen has strung together a season-best four straight victories to improve to 14-9 and the victory Friday night avenged a 24-point loss earlier this month to the Royals.  Kate Hill led Gehlen with 16 points, Lauren Heying added 14, Addison Weber 13 and Sydney Livermore 10.  The Lady Jays connected on 22-of-24 foul shots and hit all 12 of their fourth quarter attempts.  MMCRU’s leading scorer, Taylor Harpenau (16.2 ppg) didn’t get her first field goal until the final minute of the third quarter and ended up with just nine points.  Ellie Hilbrands (13.2 ppg) was checked to seven points.  Jaylen Bork had 16 to lead the Royals and Mya Holmes added 12.  GehlenCatholic takes on No. 9 Kingsley-Pierson (20-4) Wednesday night in the Regional finals at the Le Mars Community Competition gym at 7 p.m.  Coverage on KLEM starts at 6:50.

CARROLL — It took last second heroics at the end of regulation and then at the end of both overtimes but Le Mars advanced to the 4A Regional finals, beating the Carroll Tigers 50-47 in double overtime Saturday evening semifinals in Carroll.  Senior Jaelynn Dreckman hit the lone field goal for Le Mars in the fourth quarter with seven seconds to play to forge a 38-all tie and send the game into overtime.  Le Mars fell behind 41-38 in the first overtime and didn’t hit a field goal until Karlee Shiff drained a three-pointer with 24.8 seconds to play to tie the score at 41-41, sending the game into a second four-minute overtime period.  Shiff opened the second overtime with a three-point play before Carroll ran off six straight points for a 47-44 lead.  Jaelynn Dreckman’s field goal at the 1:04 mark drew the Lady Dogs to within 47-46 and Dreckman was fouled on a rebound of a missed Carroll shot and hit both ends of a one-and-one free throw opportunity for a 48-47 Le Mars lead.  Mya Kibby hit a two more free throws with :03.6 seconds to play for a three-point lead and the Tigers had no answer.  The game started well for Le Mars as they jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first four minutes.  But Carroll ran off the next 17 points to grab the lead at 19-10.  An 11-0 run by Le Mars near the end of the first half helped the Lady Bulldogs reclaim a 22-21 lead before a last second bankshot gave the Tigers a one-point halftime advantage.  Alivia Van Otterloo hit a three to close the third stanza and Le Mars had a 36-30 advantage entering the final quarter of regulation play.  Jaelynn Dreckman had 15 points and Karlee Shiff 11 for the Lady Bulldogs, who were playing without Brooke Haage do to a concussion and lost Shaniah Temple before halftime to a shoulder injury.  Both may be questionable for the finals.  Kennedy Lein led all scorers with 21 for Carroll.  Le Mars (11-11) plays at No. 3 Glenwood (23-0) Tuesday night at 7 pm for a trip to the 4A State Tournament.  KLEM will be there to cover the game with an air time of 6:50.
