Scheitler Family Awarded “Citizens Of The Year”

(Le Mars) — A rural Le Mars family that wishes to give JOY to those who visit their elaborate Christmas light display is the recipient of this year’s Le Mars Area Chamber of Commerce “Citizen of the Year.” Rob and Joyce Schietler, owners of the Christmas Acres, say they were shocked when notified of the honor.

Joyce says she is quite humbled for the recognition, saying “we are just everyday people.” For the past several years, visitors to the Christmas Acres light display have made monetary donations. The Scheitlers have collected those funds, and offer it as a contribution to the Christian Needs Center of Le Mars. Rob explains the amount has been growing each year, with 2020 a eye-opening figure.

Rob is presenting a check to Steve Kolker with Christian Needs Center for the amount of donations given at Christmas Acres.

The Schietler family is also heavily involved with the Le Mars Farmers Market. Every Saturday during the season, the Schietlers, along with several other local vendors are at the Cork-It backyard selling home-made baked goods.

The Schietler’s also are active with their church and the various activities. In fact, Rob is called upon, not only from his own home church, but others to assist with playing the organ.

Rob says he never dreamed that his hobby and interest would become a a tourist attraction for Le Mars and northwest Iowa.  Rob is quick to point out that their Christmas Acres is not the only holiday tourist attraction.

He says we are fortunate to live in such a caring community as Le Mars.
