The Gehlen men’s golf advanced to 4-1 for the first time in War Eagle conference play since who knows when?  The Jays are tied with Unity Christian at 4-1 and Akron-Westfield and HLP are 3-1.

West Sioux shot their low round of the year with a 200, the Jays carded a 190, as the golf course was the victor yesterday.

Chris Schmidt and SR Dylan Barthole tied for medalist with 44’s and Chris won the 1st medal in the 2nd playoff hole.  Gehlen had the 3rd medalist from FR Dawson Barthole with a 47 and JR Carson Sitzmann with a 49.

Gehlen’s SR Jordan Reuter had a 50 to round out the scoring.  West Sioux’s counters were Avery Millikan 50, Mason Coppoch 51, and Booker Walsh with a 57.

FR Landen Reuter had a 52 to be the JV medalist.  Gehlen JV posted a 222 and counted Michael Steege 54, Ryan Budden 58, and Camden De Rocher 58.

The Jays take on rival Unity Christian at 4:30 pm Monday at Landsmeer in Orange City.  UC is the heavy favorite in the next match.  The Jays have a busy week with the CYO 18 hole event in Fort Dodge, Wednesday, and at Harris Lake Park, another very good team, on Thursday next week.

Results for Tuesday, April 20, 2021

Le Mars boys varsity/JV/exhibition tennis played Spencer last night at Spencer. Varsity lost 6-3, JV won 5-4, and exhibition won 6-0. Varsity is now 4-1 on the year, JV is now 4-0 on the year, and exhibition is now 4-0 on the year.

This was an extremely competitive meet where multiple matches could have gone either way, which makes the team loss even more difficult. Spencer is a very well-coached team with lots of talent on the roster. This was a great test for our guys at this point in the season. We have a lot to take away from this meet and hopefully improve on as we progress to postseason play.

Kaden Wingert was stellar as usual at the number one spot, winning 10-0. He dictated the points throughout the entire match.

Matt Ahlers got down early, but kept battling to the very end, losing 11-9.  He gave himself a shot at the end, but fell just short.

Michael Meis had a one game lead for most of the match, but couldn’t hold on at the end, losing 10-8. His serve and net play keeps steadily improving, however.

Jaxon Baumgartner started down 1-4. I loved to see his fight as well making it close at the end, to lose 10-6. Jaxon has been putting himself in a tough spot, getting down early in matches. He has been able to overcome those slow starts up until tonight.

Ryan Brown lost a heartbreaker in a tiebreak, 11-10 (8-6). He was down 6-9, but dug out of the hole to send it to a tiebreak. He came  out strong to take a 6-2 lead in the tiebreak, but couldn’t finish the match with multiple match point opportunities. Ryan played a physical, hard-fought match.

Sam Bowen ran into a great opponent at the varsity six spot, losing 10-2.

Le Mars played well in doubles, taking two of the three matches. Ahlers and Meis moved up to the varsity one doubles position tonight for the first time all year, and won 10-5, for a great signature win on their resume. Jaxon and Ryan won 11-9 to remain undefeated at number three doubles on the year. They have outstanding chemistry between the two of them.

Le Mars will travel to Spirit Lake on Thursday and host SBL on Friday to wrap up the week.

2021 GEHLEN CATHOLIC JAYS GOLF

The Gehlen Jays men’s golf team moved to 3-1 in War Eagle Conference last night at Deer Run GC in Hinton, winning a close one by a score of 192-198.  Gehlen moves to a tie for 1st place in the War Eagle Conference with Akron Westfield and Unity Christian at 3-1, Hinton falls to 3-2, fourth in the conference.

The Jays depth provided the win as the #3 and #4 counting scores were seven shots lower than the Blackhawks counting scores.  Teams count the low four scores of six players in each match.

Hinton’s JR Beau Cook was medalist with a 43, recording a birdie from 15″ on #3!  Gehlen’s team captain, SR Dylan Barthole, returned a 44 and also carded a birdie, his was on #7 from 53′!  Gehlen FR Dawson Barthole and Hinton JR Brody Spies tied at 45, with Barthole winning the scorecard playoff.  The younger Barthole also birdied #3 from 18″!

Gehlen starts a very busy schedule with three dual matches, all away from home, and the CYO Tournament in Fort Dodge in the next eight days.  It will be quite a test for the young Jays golfers.

Gehlen is at West Sioux in Hawarden on Thursday as the Varsity and JV return full squad action.  The Gehlen JV is 3-0 this year.  Hinton next plays at Remsen St. Mary’s on Thursday.
