The Gehlen Jays remain undefeated at Willow Creek this season as they crushed HMS by 27 strokes yesterday – 184 – 211!  Not the team’s best score of the season but good given the conditions.  The Jays are still hoping for spring weather?  Gehlen can finish no lower than a tie for 3rd in the War Eagle Conference with the win as they are now 7-3 on the season.  It was a blustery cool day and the golf course was in terrific condition but played difficult!

Medalist honors were shared by Gehlen brothers FR Dawson and SR Dylan Barthole with (+6) 42’s. The younger Barthole won the scorecard playoff with a par on the 2nd playoff hole, #9 with a 6′ par putt, his first win of the season as a medalist!  Gehlen JR Elias Sitzmann carded a 48 for 3rd medalist and HMS’s Ben Haack had a 50 for 4th place.

The Jays JV lost their first and final match of the season and finished at 7-1 for the season in the WEC as they were edged by HMS 224-227.  The Jays JR Ryan Budden was the JV medalist at 53.

The Jays want to invite all of their fans out for the Jays Classic on Friday at Willow Creek where they will take on some very good teams in an 18 hole tournament beginning with a shotgun start at 9:30AM.  Some of the top area golf teams will be coming to The Ice Cream Capital of the World!

Gehlen plays in the WEC Conference championship next Tuesday at The Ridge on May 11th.  They begin postseason play at Sectionals on May 14th in Newell IA and need to finish in the top three to advance to Regionals as Newell-Fonda is the prohibitive favorite on the unusual golf course .

The Gehlen Jays Men won both halves of the triangular against War Eagle Conference foes South O’Brien and Trinity Christian at Willow Creek’s Red Course yesterday.  The Jays recorded a respective 184 in gusty 40 mph North winds that played havoc with all of the player’s games today.  Trinity Christian fired a 203 and South O’Brian a 211.  The Jays are now in 4th place at 6-3 with one final meet scheduled for tonight at home against Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn at 4:30PM.

SR Dylan Barthole led the way for the victorious Jays posting a 42 (+7).  TC’s Braxton Brummel returned a 45 for 2nd medalist.  Gehlen’s FR Gabe Wiltgen shot a 46 with a birdie 3 on #7, FR Dawson Barthole a 47, and FR Landen Reuter a 49, recovered from an out of bounds on #9 and a lost ball on #1, four strokes penalties but rallied to help the Jays’ cause.  JR Carson Sitzmann carded a 51 and JR Elias Sitzmann a 52 to round out the Jays scoring, and he tied Alex De Boer of TC at that number.

Gehlen took the top four medalist honors in the match against South O’Brien with SR Dylan Barthole with a 42, FR Gabe Wiltgen with a 46, FR Dawson Barthole added a 47, and FR Landen Reuter’s 49 to round out the Jays counting scores. Brecken Coady was low for South O’Brien with a 50. JR’s Carson Sitzmann and Elias Sitzmann had 51 and 52 respectively for the winning Jays.

Le Mars boys varsity tennis played Council Bluffs AL and TJ on Friday night. Le Mars beat AL 6-3 and then beat TJ 9-0. Le Mars is now 9-1 on the year. The Bulldogs travel to Sioux City East on Monday and then head to Omaha for the MRAC Tennis Tournament on Tuesday. A few comments:

This was a great night for the Le Mars boys tennis program. Council Bluffs AL has been a MRAC tennis powerhouse for many years now. AL was 11-1 on the year before we played them. I’m very proud of the guys for battling through tough points, games, and matches to come out on top.

Kaden Wingert won a thriller in the varsity one position, 9-8 (7-2 tiebreak). Kaden overcame double faults, missed overheads, and some other tough breaks to beat one of the better players in Western Iowa. A match like this should really take Kaden’s confidence to another level – he stayed the course and fought through adversity to get this victory.

Kaden paired up with Kade Calhoun to win number two doubles, 8-6. This was the best tennis these two have played all year. Kade showed a lot of poise down the stretch, holding his serve to seal the win.

Jaxon Baumgartner played some of his best tennis of the year, winning 8-3 at number four singles. We worked on hitting through the ball more in practice leading up to this meet, and it showed. He was ripping some groundstrokes.

Ryan Brown continues to perform at the varsity five spot, winning 8-5. Ryan is so tough because he doesn’t give his opponent many free points. He covers the court so well and keeps the ball in play.

Matt Ahlers and Michael Meis stayed on fire at number one doubles, winning 8-1. These two are clicking at the right time. Ahlers is just exceptional at the net. Meis has developed a weapon of a serve. After they both lost their singles matches, they responded exceptionally well, showing a lot of maturity to focus on the doubles match.

After knocking off AL, the guys didn’t let the high keep them from taking care of business against TJ. They were able to lock in for the second meet of the day and continue playing wonderful tennis to win 9-0 as a team.

Lastly, Le Mars is fortunate to have multiple assistant coaches, in Greer Milledge and Tracy Wingert. These two have been a real asset to the program over the course of the year – providing instruction, giving insights, and helping this team put it all together.
