Le Mars boys tennis played Storm Lake at Storm Lake on Saturday morning (May 15) in a preliminary substate team dual. Varsity won 5-2, advancing the Le Mars varsity team to the substate round against Denison on Saturday, May 22. The winner of the Le Mars/Denison dual qualifies for the state tournament. The first round of team state is that same day (May 22), and the winner of Le Mars/Denison will play the winner of Spencer/Carroll Kuemper in the state tournament quarterfinals.

Postseason meets end once the winning team reaches five wins.

A few comments:

Kaden Wingert takes his singles record to 16-2 on the year, winning a thriller of a match at the varsity one spot. Kaden stayed the course and persevered in the third set to win 7-6 (7-1), 2-6, 6-1. Jaylen (Storm Lake opponent) was hitting the ball extremely well – Kaden had to dig deep in some long rallies. I’m pleased with the mental strength Kaden showed during this match. He’s a true competitor – he plays his best when the pressure rises. He’s someone you want leading your team in these postseason battles.

Jaxon Baumgartner and Ryan Brown both picked up singles wins on Saturday and then paired up to snag a doubles win, giving us three of our five wins. These two seniors have been holding down the bottom half of our lineup all season long. They are both 10-1 in singles, with Jaxon playing at the varsity four spot and Ryan at the varsity five spot. They are 12-0 as a doubles team at the varsity three spot in team dual meets this year. I know exactly what I’m getting out of these two every time we take the court. Going into the season, I didn’t know what to expect as they were primarily JV players in previous years. They have risen to the occasion this season and are a significant reason why we are finding success as a team down the stretch. The two of them are two of the most coachable athletes you will find.

Kade Calhoun picked up a win at the varsity six spot. Kade plays such steady tennis, not giving the opponent many free points. He’s really developed his game over the course of this season.

As a team, we are putting it all together at the right time. Four of our six varsity members had no experience at the varsity level before this year. I’m very proud of the work the guys have put in this year, starting back in March, as we now have a chance to qualify for state on Saturday.
