Bulldogs Sweep Wolverines with Prolific Run Scoring

The Le Mars softball team won their 4th and 5th games in a row winning game 1 13-0 and game 2 12-2 over Sioux City West. The Bulldogs opened up the scoring early by scoring a run in the first inning and two runs in the second. Eighth grader Brenna Leraas picked up her first varsity RBI in the second inning and that was followed by an RBI double from Maggie Allen. The Bulldogs continued the onslaught with a 4-run fifth inning and a 6-run seventh inning.

While all of this was happening at the plate, Alivia Milbrodt was retiring Wolverine hitters with ease. She pitched a shutout allowing five hits and striking out 12.

Milbrodt’s strikeout total now sits at 62 on the season. Milbrodt leads the MRAC in Earned Run Average, wins, strikeouts, and walks plus hits per inning pitched. Head Coach Keely Steffen attributes her success in the circle to the work she put in during the offseason.

In game 2 it was a bit tougher for each teams to scratch runs across. The Bulldogs got a run across in the top half of the first off a double by Libby Leraas that scored Maggie Allen. The game remained 1-0 until the top half of the fifth inning when Maggie Allen scored another run on another double by Libby Leraas.

Then the floodgates opened as the Bulldog offense sent 12 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth inning and scored seven runs. They followed that up with a three-run seventh to take a 12-0 lead. The Wolverines scored two runs in the bottom half of the seventh to get to our 12-2 final.

Those runs scored by West snapped a streak of 30 consecutive scoreless innings by Bulldog pitchers. The Bulldogs are still on a five-game winning streak and Coach Steffen says that is a result of everyone coming to the ballpark and doing their job.

Libby Leraas finished game 2 4-5 with three doubles and six RBIs. Coach Steffen says these moments are not too tall for Leraas because she is well-prepared thanks to her practice routine.

The Bulldogs are now 9-4 and 7-1 in MRAC play. They will be home tonight against Storm Lake in a single non-conference game.
