Gehlen Softball Wins Their Fifth In a Row

Gehlen Catholic softball increased their winning streak to five games with a 7-1 win over MMCRU last night.

While the Jays got the win last night, it was MMCRU that got the first score of the game. Taylor Harpenau reached on a two-out single and then scored after a pick-off attempt was thrown into right field. That run snapped a 25 and two-third inning scoreless streak that Rylee Schnepf had built over her last four outings. The second time through the Gehlen order proved to be beneficial as the top of the order came up in the third and the first four batters reached base. Alyssa Kolbeck and Larissa Pohlen drove in runs in the inning to give the Jays their first lead at 2-1. The score staid that way until the top of the fifth when Gehlen put two more runs on thanks to a lead off double from Rylee Schnepf and RBIs from Larissa Pohlen again and Corra Yockey. Gehlen scored two more in the top of the sixth, Rylee Schnepf drove in another on a double in the seventh for good measure to put the Jays up 7-1.

The top third of the Gehlen order went 7-13 with six runs and two RBIs. Head Coach Tony Gunter says its important for this part of the order to be clicking on all cylinders.

One bright spot and surprise out of the order for Coach Gunter was the play of Corra Yockey who picked up her first two hits of the season and her first RBI.

While the Jays scored seven runs, they left twelve runners on base. The fix for Coach Gunter? Improve his team’s small ball ability.

Gehlen Catholic pitcher Rylee Schnepf picked up her 10th win in the circle last night by going seven innings, allowing five hits, one unearned run and striking out seven. Schnepf recently broken Gehlen’s all-time pitching wins record and passed the 500 career strikeout mark. Coach Gunter says her hard work has paid off.

Gehlen improves to 11-4 and 5-1 in the War Eagle Conference. They will play two games tomorrow in Sioux Center. First up will be #10 rated in 3A Sioux Center and then Storm Lake.
