Bulldog Baseball Splits with Bishop Heelan Behind Williams’ Heroics

307

Le Mars baseball splits the doubleheader and season series with Bishop Heelan last night losing the first game 7-0 and winning the first game 1-0.

The third and fourth innings were where it was at the Crusader offense. The Heelan bats scored one run in the third inning and six runs in the fourth to put up the seven they needed to beat Le Mars. The six run inning was highlighted by a two-out three-run double by Kaleb Gengler that gave the Crusaders their 7-0 lead. Le Mars was only able to contribute three hits offensively in the loss in game 1.

Le Mars head coach Trent Eckstaine attributes his team’s lack of confidence and performance offensively to their struggles defensively in the first game.

Game 2 brought a much different result for the Bulldogs. The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third when Le Mars got runners on second and third with one out and Brady Williams grounded out to short to score Reece Spieler, the game’s only run. Williams went on to pitch a gem finishing off the complete game shutout allowing five hits, walking one, and striking out four. Coach Eckstaine says that the junior had both pitches working to the best of his ability.

Williams wasn’t just done on the mound. At the plate, Williams connected on two of Le Mars’ three hits in game 1 and drove in the only run in game 2. That was a welcome sight for Coach Eckstaine.

The Bulldogs have a tall task tonight in taking on number-five ranked in 4A Dowling Catholic. Coach Eckstaine wants his team to remain calm and in the moment against a powerhouse program.

With the split, Le Mars is now 18-8 and 17-5 in the MRAC keeping them at 2nd in the conference over Bishop Heelan.
