Gehlen Catholic softball advanced to the Regional quarterfinals last night with a 5-1 opening round win over Trinity Christian.
The Jays got all the runs they would need in the bottom of the second inning. The Jays batted around in the inning with the first six hitters reaching base that inning as well. The scoring started with a bases loaded walk from Cindy Pohlen that gave the Jays a 1-0 lead. Jayden Barthole followed that with a two-run base hit to give the Jays a 3-0 advantage. The scoring in the inning was capped off by a two-run double off the bat of Larissa Pohlen.
Emily Kellen continued to pitch blanks until the fifth inning when she let a Tiger runner get to third and come in to score on a wild pitch. That would be all Trinity Christian could muster offensively the rest of the way as the Jays went on to win 5-1.
Kellen went the distance in the circle allowing one run, five hits, and striking out 11. With Rylee Schnepf out with an injury, Head Coach Tony Gunter is proud of how Kellen is using this opportunity to lead the team in a different less utilized role as a senior.
The Jays got all of their runs from the bottom third of the order. Coach Gunter is hoping this rare outburst can give those players the confidence they need for the rest of the playoffs.
The Jays move on to the Class 1A Region 1 Quarterfinals. That game was supposed to be played tonight but is now moved to tomorrow evening. GTRA and MMCRU’s game last night was suspended due to the weather and is being made up tonight. The Jays’ record sits at 17-11 heading into the next round of the playoffs.
