Remsen St. Mary’s Drops State Quarterfinal Game to #2 Wayne

Monday afternoon, Remsen St. Mary’s magical run towards a state championship was finished with a 7-2 loss at the hands of the 2-seeded Wayne Falcons.

The Falcons showed why they were the number-two team in the state by scoring early on Remsen St. Mary’s. The Falcons scored two runs in the bottom of the first inning with two outs and coming on four straight hits. The Falcons followed that up with a run with two outs in the bottom of the second inning to make it 3-0. Remsen St. Mary’s Head Coach Monte Harpenau says that he just had to tip his cap towards Wayne’s ability to get hits.

The Hawks weren’t about to let their run to a title come to an end that easy. Remsen St. Mary’s took advantage of two Wayne errors in the top of the fifth inning to score their only two runs of the game. Coach Harpenau says that those errors and runs were a result of his team’s improvement in the small ball game.

Those two Remsen St. Mary’s runs made our score 3-2 entering the bottom of the fifth when Wayne tacked on two more runs. The Falcons were not done as they padded their lead with two more in the bottom of the sixth inning. Wayne managed to score six of their runs with two outs in the inning as they rolled to a 7-2 victory over Remsen St. Mary’s.

Remsen St. Mary’s now moves on to the consolation bracket where they will play this morning at 11:30 AM against Clarksville. The Hawks know that this is a chance for them to end their season on a high note and take something away from a trip to the state tournament.

The Hawks take a 21-5 record into this morning’s matchup with Clarksville. You can listen to that consolation game right here on KLEM. First pitch is 11:30. The Falcons of Wayne improve to 24-4 on the season and matchup with three-seeded Lisbon at 1:00 on Wednesday in the state semifinals.
