Gehlen Catholic Rides Late Momentum to Win Over MMCRU

Gehlen Catholic advanced to their fifth consecutive regional final on Monday night as they beat MMCRU 3-0. (25-18, 25-23, 25-11)

The Jays had some trouble early with MMCRU’s duo of hitters. Emily Dreckman and Ellie Hilbrands posed some match up and momentum issues for Gehlen Catholic early. Gehlen Catholic Head Coach Mike Meyer says that the Royals kept going to their hot hitters, and, in some cases, Gehlen did not have an answer.

The Jays found themselves down 21-18 late in set two without any timeouts remaining and had to dig themselves out of a hole to win. They did that, and Coach Meyer says that it was a big moment in the match.

The Jays finished with five players with at least five kills each in the match. Coach Meyer says that was crucial to the Jays success especially because MMCRU was focusing hard on Miyah Whitehead.

Gehlen Catholic now has a quick turnaround to the regional finals on Wednesday. Gehlen Catholic now pairs up with Akron-Westfield who defeated Westwood last night 3-0. Coach Meyer knows that for his team to have success on Wednesday, they will have to worry more about what they do than what their opponent does.

First serve between the Jays and Westerners on Wednesday is slated for 8:00 PM from the O’Gorman Fieldhouse at Bishop Heelan in Sioux City. KLEM Radio will broadcast the match live on Wednesday night.
