(Le Mars) — During the Gehlen Catholic Veteran’s Day program held this morning (Thursday), three veterans, two brothers and their father, were presented with a “Quilt of Valor.” Ginny Freyermuth along with Past Post Commander, Wayne Schipper spoke about the “Quilts of Valor” program. They had a short slide presentation showing showing various quilts, including a quilt, created and sewn by Ginny Freyermuth that was presented to U-S Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa. Freyermuth then read the name of the recipient of the Quilt of Valor.
Freyermuth then read the official certificate that accompanies the presentation of the quilt of valor.
The second quilt presentation was awarded to another Marine veteran and brother to today’s first quilt recipient.
The last quilt presentation was awarded to the father of the boys, Stanley Schietler.
Prior to the awarding of the “Quilts of Valor”, American Legion Past Post Commander Wayne Schipper informed the Gehlen Catholic students the importance of giving thanks to active military service personnel, and to the nation’s veterans.
Schipper was the co-speaker of the program. He said that the “Quilts of Valor” program started in 2003.
Schipper indicated the quilts are made with donated volunteer labor, and each quilt is awarded, no one can purchase a quilt of valor.
Following the presentations of the quilts of valor, Gehlen students then recited the more than 100 names of those present and past military service personnel that are listed on the “Wall of Honor.”
